Is S'pore getting too crowded?

FIVE million people and growing.

Singapore's latest census revealed that the population has crossed the 5 million mark for the first time, hitting 5.08 million this year.

While Singapore may be growing in terms of population, it also needs to grow in terms of attitude and approach towards life. In other words, the 'it takes two hands to clap' theory works best given present circumstances.

That was the key takeaway during a RazorTV studio discussion on Singapore's burgeoning population and the influx of foreigners to our shores.

The predominant recommendation - remain open to the idea of integrating foreigners into society, and encourage a two-way process to assimilate language, culture and values.

Other hot button issues of concern to many Singaporeans such as housing, jobs, service standards and a widening gender imbalance were also discussed.

Greater Tokyo is 239 square miles (618 square km) and is home to more than 17 Million people in the day time and 12 Million at night... which means that 5 Million people commute to and from work from the outer bedtown cities daily.

Public transport is hopeless already. Even after gotten out of the hopeless public transport, anywhere I walked I felt like a jockey starting from barrier 1 and have to switch lane and overtake other jockeys. Occasionally have to check blind spot, otherwise other jockey may just bang onto me. You never encounter this everywhere meh ?

the old man went to hk many years ago, found that they had 5.5 million pop, enjoyed the "buzz", saw the financial sector and business community booming, and liked it. he was envious and wanted his pet project sg to be like hk. he even went on a media blitz to tout the hk buzz and "critical mass", and pushed for sg to reach or surpass the same critical mass. well, he forgot one thing - density. hk has a larger land mass because of the new territories on the mainland. hongkongers can expand inwards inland. sg can only reclaim and do landfills, which are far more expensive, material and time consuming. at 7.7 million pop, hk would still be far less dense than sg at 5.5 million pop. density comes with a hefty price tag in capital spending and social cost. leaders need to take some basic education in math 101 and science 99 before they launch themselves into a dream policy. and this applies to bush and obama.

Singapore was already a rojak since Raffles time. It is still a rojak. We thrive on being rojak as well. If you want desert, Australia has a good one.

but look at the japanese , they could only speak their own language . most of them still cannot speak english . korean too . because they mix with their own people too much .

look at London and New york , they have also good mix of quality FT to make their city a better place .

and if singapore open to quality FT that will be good for singapore image . very soon quality FT also dont want to come singapore because of rude PRC and indian FT .
