Is Singapore ready for a female prime minister?

OCTOBER 25 — A few months ago, Singaporeans watched as the rather surprising results of general election 2015 were announced. The final tallies may have defied the pundits’ expectations but one thing was emphatically not a surprise — far fewer women than men were elected to Parliament.

Women won 18 of 84 contested seats and together with five nominated (un-elected MPs), the sex holds just over 20 per cent of the seats in Parliament. The proportion has been more or less flat for over a decade.

Of course this is a global phenomenon. Women represent 50 per cent of the population in most countries but only a handful of parliaments reflect anything near the real demographic balance; Sweden and Finland are strong performers... as is Rwanda.

However, it can’t be denied that female representation in Singapore’s Parliament has increased significantly from effectively 0 per cent in the 70s and 80s to over 20 per cent today but the truth is that in positions of true power — ministries and positions at the top of the administrative and economic hierarchy — women are sorely under-represented.

MP Amy Khor should make a good PM. She is said to have told sinkies to fuck off from the country if buay song. Now, if she became the PM, she could import more foreigners to become shitizens to replace departing sinkies.

Another female contender is MP Grace Fu. She is said to have commented that she would resign if not paid well as MP. Now, if she became PM, she could raise her own salary sky high to justify her position as PM of a rich country.

Are you kidding, singapore has already had 2 female prime ministers, its just that both are non elected. Who wrote most of Old Fart's speeches, and influence policies like the women charter, birth and population planning etc. It was Gecko all the way.

As for Gay Loong, the pink shirt wearing, cross leg bapok does not wear the pants in his family. whore Jinx does and i am sure she has a big influence on govt policies.

Our PM is just for show only!

The council of unelected people controlling the background are actually running the country!

Female and minority representation is nothing but archaic throwbacks which have no relevance in Singkielands Meritocratic society,,,if singkieland is meritocratic,,than the most competent person gets the job and not based on the skin color, or gender or religion,,,

Rubbish! Women are well represented in the top echelons of power. Who is heading Temasek you tell me? Who is running MOE? It is not the number that matters. We choose the best people for the job regardless of their gender. Trouble is there are not that many who are good enough for the roles they must perform. We cannot compromise the welfare of Singaporeans for the facade of gender equality. It does not make sense at all.

I think Kumar will make a good leader for Singapore. But people are prejudiced because s/he is Indian.

Cheers!
