Is it me or TOC is very Pro-AWARE now?

Is TOC trying to screw local men further by being so pro-AWARE? I'm okay with AWARE if they are really trying to have gender equality thing in the country but the Women Charter is already over-protecting the women and putting the men at a disadvantage legally.

It is fifty years since the Women’s Charter became Law. Fifty years since Singapore women were catapulted from a feudal society into the twentieth century. Women in independent countries were then fighting for equality and for equal opportunity. In the USA the Second Wave of the feminist movement was about to become a mighty force for change.

It is hard to imagine just how different the world was for Singapore women before the 1960s.

The key recommendations to policy makers are:

1. A quota of 30 per cent be set for women in Parliament as recommended by the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which was ratified by Singapore in 1995.
2. The Singapore Constitution be amended to prohibit gender discrimination.
3. All policies and legislation be reviewed and all gender discriminatory laws, policies and practices be removed or replaced with laws, policies and practices that promote an equitable and sustainable work-life balance for both women and men.
4. Gender studies be added to the core curriculum for all students, and in the Civil Service.
5. Budgetary allocations to health care be increased significantly so as to ensure the good health of older people.
6. Care-giving (of the young and the elderly) should be recognised as a gender-neutral skill, and the quality of, and access to, care facilities and services for children, elderly and the disabled should be improved

Guest of Honor Minister Lim Hwee Hua, Second Minister for Finance and Second Minister for Transport referred to the Charter as a “key statue” as it not only facilitated family roles but more prominently, the Charter was the first legal guarantee to gender equality as it outlawed polygamy. Other legal rights it gave women are the rights to own property, conduct trade and receive divorce settlements. She also credited the PAP for its efforts such as national healthcare system, housing and accessible education that brought forth the equality of Singaporean women today. Ms Lim noted that Singapore has 23.4 percent of women in parliament which is above the international average of 19 percent. Asserting that women took huge strides in the economic status as well, she said that last year saw 72 percent of women in the prime working ages of 25 to 54 years old in the workforce, and the percentages of women in high position jobs are on the rise.

Though Ms Lim applauded the recent amendments in January this year to the Women’s’ Charter, she called for these three issues to be addressed: (1) To mitigate the impact of divorce, (2) Look into women’s’ access to maintenance fees, and (3) domestic violence.

Former AWARE president and current president of human rights NGO MARUAH Braema Mathi will speak at The Online Citizen’s Budget Forum 2011. She will replace Mr Tan Kin Lian who has to turn down our invitation due to other commitments.

Ms Mathi will be speaking on behalf of AWARE on the need to bring women’s perspective to the Singapore Budget.

The government needs to provide more data transparency in the Budget reports, said Ms Braema Mathi at The Online Citizen’s Budget Forum on Saturday.

She was one of the three panelists invited to speak at the forum.

Ms Mathi, a former AWARE president and current president of human rights NGO MARUAH, spoke on behalf of AWARE on the need to bring women’s perspective to the Singapore Budget.

“It is very important for us to start lobbying, advocating with the government on what we feel from a women’s’ perspective (what) we see as gaps in the Budget,” she said.

These are the five focus key areas she expounded on:

1. Families with children
2. Care giving
3. People in financial distress
4. Women’s health
5. Women and employment

HDB, CPF, Healthcare, Jobs, Income, etc – What do they mean for women who are economically disadvantaged? Do some of our economic and social policies need to be reviewed from the perspective that they may be contributing to a trend of increasing systemic risks for lower-income women in the workforce or homemakers? Should we focus on helping more and more women and their children who need help? Or should we give more attention to awareness and understanding of the policies that may be the dominant cause of poverty? Malaysia gives a monthly allowance of RM1.050 to disabled workers, concessionary public transport for the disabled and elderly, RM1 for medical treatment at public clinics, free treatment and drugs for HIV patients, public housing from RM25,000, etc. These are just some of the comparisons which will be discussed vis-a-vis women in poverty in Singapore.http://theonlinecitizen.com/2011/01/women-and-poverty-roundtable-discussion/
