That's because communism as put into practice has grossly deviated from the ideals envisaged by Marx - where the means of production are owned by the working class and not the capitalist class, resulting in a stateless, classless society freed from the superstitions of religious fanaticism.

In reality, even when the proletariat came into power, the majority of the working class were still subject to the tyranny of the few leaders at the top, substituting one form of tyranny for another poorer version. Cronyism and nepotism still remained, without recourse for the people to legitimately change governments via peaceful elections. With top-down leadership, you get rapid progress in terms of reducing inequity (if you start off as a poor developing country) if the administration is benevolent and forward looking. If you have a corrupt or incompetent leadership, the country is screwed.
