Minister Chee added that other global cities like London and Hong Kong also do not display fare deductions and card balances at fare gates, as they use ABT cards.

Checking the balance

Every time you use your card, the display next to the card reader will show the amount deducted for that transaction as a negative figure together with the remaining balance. If you miss this though, there are dedicated balance checkers in all MTR stations or you can check on the Octopus app.

ABT (Automatic Fare Collection) cards are commonly used in mass transit systems for seamless and efficient payment of fares. These cards, often contactless, allow passengers to swipe or tap the card on readers when entering and exiting public transportation, deducting the appropriate fare automatically. ABT cards streamline the ticketing process, reducing queues and improving the overall efficiency of mass transit systems.

if it is a card based system (stored value card), you can see the balance because all info your the card is inside. for card based system, once u lose the card, you lose the cash in it .

if it is an account based system, you cant see the balance, because it works like a credit card or debit card. for example, when you pay for a purchase in 7-11 and you use credit or debit card, are you able to see you bank balance when you tap the card? you cant.

think along this principle and it will be clearer

As with any INNOVATION, there will always be pro & cons, but ULTIMATELY, the CONSUMERS are the ones whom will decide what is best, as the principle of innovation is what it is all about, to UPLIFT lives & they WILL be the ones whom will determine govt & company successes thru adoption, adaptation & support.

Regardless of even the Hong Kong system, ruled by dictatorship China now, over such cards, had such innovations brought benefits or detriment instead?

No doubt there is ease in travel, as well as even info being displayed on PERSONAL apps or the various machines placed nearby to check the value in cards, HOWEVER, do consider the plight of average users of such cards - is it worth the time to QUEUE up on long lines during peak hrs, as to most hardworking citizens to check upon mere amounts left in cards that EZ link had long provided & had been able to provide?

What is PRODUCTIVITY then, that technology seeks to evolve?

ALSO, NO Human would be foolish enough to top up such cards with HUGE sums, as should such cards be lost or stolen, it would only mere few dollars which MOST avg Humans would do so wisely.

What is SECURITY then, that technolgy seeks to evolve & uplift lives?

The only time I purchase a new EZlink is when the previous card is expiring. The stored value is maximum $50 per top up.

In a ABT system, the onus inherently falls upon the user to ensure he/she doesn’t become a Kum Gong Kia and store up thousands of dollars and to subsequently losing/misplacing his/her card.

Think along this line and it will be clearer.

May be sir tat was referring to their eye side getting bad over there.
