iPhone app helps police nab snatch thief

Posted: 24 January 2012 1947 hrs

SINGAPORE : Police have arrested a 35-year-old man for snatch theft following a crucial lead provided by an iPhone application.

The victim, a 31-year-old woman, was walking along Tanjong Katong Road at about 9.15pm on Monday when a man approached her from behind.

The suspect snatched the woman's clutch bag.

Among the items in the bag that was stolen was her iPhone.

The victim immediately called the police.

The breakthrough came when the stolen phone was traced via an iPhone application "Find My iPhone".

With this lead, and armed with a description of the suspect, officers arrested the man at 10.46pm along Jalan Dua.

The suspect will be charged in court on Wednesday.

If convicted, he could be jailed up to seven years and caned.
