Unlike most of the civilized bookish world Japan has always respected warriors (武) more than scholars (武). Japan has always been established more by force than by reason. How their Shoguns overthrew and manipulated their own Emperors for so many centuries, how they defeated China and made the then Qing Emperor cede Korea and Taiwan (that causes so much of the unnecessary ideological bickerings and problems today) that brought shame on all the Chinese, how they defeated the Russians that shocked them and the Westerners, etc.
Also, among other instances Japanese soldiers we heard during since those days saw how their superiors despised Emperor Hirohito's scholarly leanings and mocked him behind his back in then Japanese territories overseas (ie Korea) and the late Ryutaro Hashimoto in a couple of years before he died made a public rebuttal by an academic on the economic policies the country should adopt, ending his comeback significantly questioning the latter's knowledge with 'can a scholar understand such pain?'.
And in most of their contest shows it seems higher ratings are always given to physical stunts over creative brain tricks.

But I think Japanese life is shaped in such a way that as a self-employed person, you can only go up to a certain limit. Everything is controlled by the zaibatsus, and unless you own and co-run one of them, you either join them (going against them is insane) or as an "independent", end up mid-level at best. But probably this mode of life is still better than those university graduates from ordinary universities with ordinary grades who sprawl the streets jobless and getting work for peanut wages if they actually found some?
