NTUC everybody knows it stands for National Trades Union Congress. What about the Income as in NTUC Income? It stands for Insurance Co-operative Multi-Enterprise. Few people know this now, not even the Income staff now.
FairPrice and Comfort, yes, by Devan Nair. Income, no, it was by Goh Keng Swee. At that time of starting union co-operatives, the name Income gave rise to the name Wellcome for the retail side. NTUC Wellcome and SILO (Singapore Independent Labour Organisation) were merged (or rather, NTUC aquired SILO) later to become NTUC FairPrice. In those days, SILO was the supermarket co-operative and NTUC Wellcome was the department store co-operative. Comfort came later when NTUC decided to start a taxi co-operative too after the government abolished individual ownership of taxi.
