Intel’s new single-chip cloud computer
Bangalore, Dec 16, DHNS:

Intel, on Wednesday, demonstrated its new Single-Chip Cloud Computer (SCC) which would pack processes in a full data centre into small chip.

The fully-programmable 48-core chip is believed to take data computing to a new level.

The 1.3 billion processor is an off-shoot of the 80-core Polaris processor Intel produced in 2007 through its Terra-Scale project. Instead of packing high-power processors, the chip would put together large volumes of low-end processors, which can collectively give high compute power.

Demostrating the system, Intel Chief Technology Officer & Head Intel Labs Justin Rattner, said With SCC, we are trying to lower power consumption, without reducing the amount of compute power required to run them. The chip has two cores per tile that not only mimics cloud data centre, but is capable of replacing an entire board from their hardware.

Enhanced applications

The network on the chip allows each core to communicate faster without bandwidth constraints and latency issues. SCC is currently being experimented by its academic and industry partners, Inel said adding Microsoft has built Visual Studio on SCC systems and would have SCC as the basis for a new cloud data centre paradigm.

Intel Labs India Senior Engineer Manager Vasantha Erraguntla said the Indian division has contributed to the project like building 2D meshes as well as validating and ensuring correctness of the design.
