The Indian aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya, bought from Russia, has failed its sea trials and its delivery to the
Indian Navy may be again delayed by almost a year.

Seven of the vessels’s eight steam boilers broke down when they were run at maximum power to enable the ship
develop its top speed of 30 knots. The fire-brick insulation of the boilers crumbled in the high temperatures.

Under the 2004 original contract for the remodelling of the heavy aviation cruiser Admiral Gorshkov into a light
aircraft carrier, the Vikramaditya was to be handed over to the Indian Navy in 2008.

But the delivery was delayed as the vessel’s condition turned out to be much worse than expected. The cost of
refurbishment escalated from just over 600 million US dollars to more than 2 billion US dollars.

It was meant to be a low cost carrier for the ah neh navy, however the Russians somehow managed to con the nehs for more money. In the end the nehs had to pay or else they will have a carrier gap until their own *gasp* neh built carriers come online next decade

Shitland didn't buy. Russia offered ah neh the carrier FOC on conditions that shitland paid for it overhaul and buy MIG29N. Ah neh (as their usual calculative nature) thought they got a good bargain since they are getting it for free.

Problem was once the ah neh paid the money, the Russian kept increasing the price citing cost overrun. Ah neh no choice but have to keep paying whenever the Russian demands. The final sum is said to be more expensive than buying a brand new carrier. The latest event is going to further add to the cost.

A case penny wise and pound foolish.
