Singapore banks boost ops for NRI cash

Posted: Thu Dec 29 2011, 11:08 hrs Singapore

Singapore-based banks are beefing up their operations to manage the USD 25 billion wealth of the city state's 300,000 non-resident Indians (NRIs), who have an investment preference for Indian securities and the rupee.

A report in The Straits Times today said the number of NRIs with an appetite for investment in India was growing, especially as more and more Indian enterprises locate to Singapore to benefit from the India-Singapore double taxation treaty for their regional businesses.

This NRI investment trend has given reasons to international banks to expand their India desks, bringing in high-level financial experts to help manage the wealth of the Singapore-based NRIs, around 5,000 of whom are high-net worth individuals (HNIs).

The banks' investment experts on India "are also in an advantageous position, as Singapore is 2-1/2 hours ahead of India, which gives the advantage of being reasonably aligned with the Indian time zone," said the Singapore daily report, quoting banking officials.

Though the NRI population in Singapore and Hong Kong is not comparable to that of the the United States, United Arab Emirates and Britain in terms of sheer size, the business volumes have made Singapore more important than Switzerland, once rated as the main source of NRI investment into India.

Singapore's estimated NRI wealth of USD 25 billion is also small vis-a-vis global NRIs' combined wealth of USD 500 billion, but the city state is nonetheless an important centre for banks from the perspective of NRI coverage, Srinivas Siripurapu, Head of South-East Asia and South Asia at Barclays Wealth in Singapore, was quoted as saying.

how can they not rob our jobs? MBA with 5-9 yrs (why can't he give a definite duration?) and only asking for $3500? don't even mind contract etc.

The last I saw was an Indian PhD working for abt $4k+ when a local at his position is probably a graduate with just a couple of years experience.

Simi lan jiao

To my knowledge, it's just a fancy way to say, "Hire me. I'm damn good for a back office job in an investment bank."

Investment Banks:

Back Office: Admin, Ops and IT support
Middle Office: Risk management, Compliance, Treasury, Control
Front Office: Sales, Trading, Research, Private equity, Raising capital, M&A

How can locals compete against such low salary expectations? Maybe foreigners should be forced to pay rents equivalent to the monthly housing loan payment for a 5-room HDB flat. Then, we will have an even playing field.

Audit confirmation means = auditors of a company sends a letter to a bank asking: "Company A says it has a bank account of $1m with your bank. Correct or not? Also include any other outstanding transactions, assets/ liabilities Company A has with your bank that we have not mentioned. Please charge Company A for your effort, okay?" This guy is the one who checks the records and replies: "Yeah correct, Company A has a bank account of $1 with our bank. It does not have any other outstanding transactions or other assets/ liabilities with our bank."

So you can see his work is low level, clerical even. Wonder what kind of MBA he has.

Who knows maybe this Bloody Pundek could faked his qualifications.. This Ah Neh fucktard could easily buy a fake degree back in his native India... Never Trust An India Ah Neh..!!!

Get fake degree, then go places

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...egree-then-go-places/articleshow/30712706.cms

IN Bangalore city you needn't have to do a course to get an MBA degree. You can simply buy a certificate for Rs 5,000. The same goes for most degrees.
Though the police exposed a major racket in manufacturing fake Bangalore University marksheets and degree certificates recently, several smaller rackets are believed to be still running in the city. These conmen are said to cater in a big way to applicants of ECNR (Emigration Check Not Required) status in passports.
"We have information of several racketeers manufacturing fake certificates. It is not difficult to catch them. But getting hold of a few blank certificates would not root them out. We have to get the printing press also and seize it. That's often difficult," said a police official.
This August the Tilaknagar police station seized scores of fake Bangalore University marksheets and degree certificates and arrested six people. The printing press that was producing these genuine-looking documents was also seized. They found blank certificates and marksheets for BA, BCom, LLB, MBA, BE, MBBS and BDS streams. What seemed to be most in demand were certificates for the MBA, hotel management diploma ,BPharm and MPharm. The printing setup was simple, but they managed to print genuine looking Bangalore University certificates.
Passport officer Soumen Bagchi said their office does come across forged certificates and the incidence is particularly high among postal applications. "We cross-check with individual universities as and when a doubt arises. It is impossible to get each university degree certificate verified as our resources are limited. But our staff is very familiar with Bangalore University emblems and signatures and chances of fake BU certificates passing for original are rare," said Bagchi.
In case of a forged document, the application is rejected and the applicant is penalised. For first time offenders, the penalty is Rs 5,000. Second time offenders are liable to be imprisoned. According to sources in the police department, the fake certificate racket targets ECNR applicants. Except for a few countries, most do not allow foreigners without an ECNR stamp into their country. "The risk of being caught trying to get a job with a fake certificate in India is high because in case of a doubt the employers can at any point get it cross-checked," sources said.
