In SG prisoners rarely escape. In NZ it happens every month!

I hope everyone takes time out to really appreciate how good the PAP is. Prisoner escapes in Singapore are few and far between.

In NZ, I see these sorts of reports almost monthly in the papers.

Prisoner escapes from Hutt Hospital

A prisoner escaped from hospital last night.

Police are searching for Wipei Awatere, 29, who escaped from the custody of two corrections officers.

Awatere, a remand prisoner at Rimutaka, escaped from Hutt Hospital.

A Department of Corrections spokesman said this may not have been the first time the prisoner had escaped from custody. It was believed Awatere may have told officers he had swallowed razor blades as a ruse to be sent to hospital.

Corrections said it would conduct a review of how prisoners were managed in hospital.

A Police spokesman said Awatere was no specific risk to the public, but should not be approached.

Prisoner escapes from Wanganui Hospital

Police are warning that a prisoner who escaped from Wanganui Hospital should not be approached.

Kenneth John Burns, 34, was under guard at the time and fled from a ward at the hospital where he had been a patient for the past 10 days.

The escape happened around 8pm last night.

Police said Burns was in custody on dishonesty offences.

Burns was described as Maori, 173cm tall and of medium-solid build and was last seen wearing a greenish coloured top, grey pants and was not wearing shoes.

Police said Burns may have connections in the wide Wanganui area, and want to remind people that assisting an escaped prisoner is an offence.

A dog was used in an attempt to track Burns and continue to search for his whereabouts, police said.

Police asked anyone with any information to contact the Wanganui Police on 06 349 0600 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Cabinet to consider inquiry into Phillip Smith's escape - Key

Smith said he'd received help to renew his passport last year.


Cabinet will consider whether there is a need for a wide-ranging inquiry into convicted murderer and paedophile Phillip Smith's escape from the country, Prime Minister John Key says.

Smith, 40, fled the country on November 6 while on temporary release from prison using a passport held in his birth name, Phillip Traynor.

He was caught in a Brazilian hostel after almost a week on the run.

A wide-ranging inquiry into how he was able to escape would be considered, Mr Key told Radio New Zealand this morning, in addition to individual reviews being carried out by all relevant Government departments.

"There are individual inquiries being undertaken in those relevant ministries and there's a number of ministry's involved.

"What Cabinet will do today is think about and consider whether there needs to be a wider inquiry," he told the broadcaster.

Escaped prisoner still on the run

A prisoner who went missing from Otago Correctional Facility has still not been found.

Dunedin police have completed an extensive search of a forest area near the prison using three police dogs.
Police will continue with ongoing enquiries.

Stephen Uriah Maddren went missing from the prison about 4pm yesterday.

Maddren is described as a male caucasian, 25 years old, about 171cm tall, with brown or black coloured shoulder length hair.
He has no teeth and was last seen wearing green trackpants and a green top.

Police said he should not be approached, but if sighted, phone 111.

Anyone with information should call Dunedin Police on 03 471 4800. Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

unlike the one and only maximum security prison in sg where some of the world's most dangerous "terrorists" are incarcerated, their prisons don't stockpile toilet rolls in each toilet cubicle, don't have open windows (with no grills) in the same toilet cubicles, and don't have a section of the wall and fence low enough for any limping cripple to hop over. :p

Nobody stopped me when I bought a one way ticket to OZ way back in the early 90s. Perhaps the Singapore system isn't that good after all.
