I guess I'm old fashioned. I still prefer a specific tool for a specific job.

I've never taken a single photo with my phone. I use a proper camera.

I don't listen to music on phone either. I use my Accuphase/Energy set up.

A smart phone reminds me of this :

It's no use Boss. Look at most of the threads and comments, your efforts will come to nought as it gets worse not better.:(

It's an uphill battle but someone has to do it. This forum can be read the world over and I don't want the standard of Singapore English to be an international embarrassment.

I wonder why the standard of English of Singaporeans is deteriorating. Is it because we have many Malaysian Chinese that took up residence here? I can understand if they are Ah Tiongs, but those who cannot speak English at all, speak dialects and Mandarin, whereas Ah Tiongs only speak Mandarin. The Singapore Malays and Indians speak and write quite well, i.e., those I have contact with in my line of work.

It has nothing to do with Malaysians. Singaporean peasant stock have never been any good at any language.

The best English has always been spoken by those from Mission schools and evidence shows that this is still the case.

Good English is spoken by those who are taught the language properly and actually take pride in speaking and writing the language well. Most people can't be bothered. They consider English to be a foreign language. They're perfectly happy with pidgin.

I don't entirely agree that those from the mission schools are the best. LKY, Francis Seow and many of the older generation although not from mission schools are good examples. Their environment and who they associate themselves with plays an important part. Hell, I have many friends that one will not even suspect they were from the Chinese medium schools for they speak and write English very well.

Wah Boss! I thought you only know four words "advice" vs "advise" and "loose" vs "lose".

I usually concentrate on the most common errors but if I have a bit of time, I extend my scope.

If I tried to point out and correct every single glaring error, I'd have no time left for anything else.

an exception, not the rule....

A generalisation and without any evidence or statistics to prove it. However, I personally hold the view that in general those who studied there speaks good English. Then again, public schools outnumber mission schools, therefore percentage-wise there are more Singaporeans from public schools who can speak and write well.

I think you are right on. The pieces of techonlogy is definitely available. I think the next step will be
system integration, testing, miniaturization and human trials etc.

that comparison holds no value in determining whether students from mission or public school are more proficient in english.

Why am I not surprised? It's a reflection of how archaic you are. Your thoughts on what constitute a good government are show up how outmoded you are perfectly ie you belong to the 20th century, I mean 19th century!
