Illegal set-top boxes seized by StarHub in raid

2 years ago i was in a factory in Ho Chi Minh which my Taiwanese friend is in-charge. He asked me to watch TV which showing Taiwanese news while he's busying something else. He told me they did not subscribe but simply insert the TV-thumbdrive which will show all TW progs. I wonder whether this can be done and available in Singapore, illegally, instead of having a setup box which is much bigger in size.

I am not familiar with taiwan cable syatem
but some countries to avoid laying cable
send all their cable channels through the air.
so the thumb drive thing is.probably
a.receiver.

In singapore only the free to air channels.
go in the air(? I think) so.you can.only watch
a few channels on this

Starhub is ripping customer off ! it is $40 per month for the most basic channels. Their programme and basically ripping off everyone hard work because govt allowed them to.

If the boxes didn't work or only work partially, people wouldn't be using them.

The fact that Starhub is taking the trouble to stop the imports shows that they are good enough to pose a threat to their bizness.
The illegal boxed probably come from the same factory as the offical Starhub boxes

There is an android app that gives you NatGeo, Discovery, CNN, Bloomberg, CNBC(?) for free. If you're primarily on these channels, you don't need starhub. The app is called IPTV.

If you got a fast fibre connection there are many cheap solutions other than Starhub.

I use to watch Hulu for free using my slow connections but they now do not allow people who login from anonymous sites.:( So you need a VPN account.

a basic subscription to SH TV costs $40. a illegal set-top box costs what $150-$200 with all channels ? you get your money worth even if the box can last for half a year only. think SH only catch & sue the sellers, not the end-users of those boxes.

Can last 6 month is damn happy go lucky.
Just buy another set. Each set less than $200 for normal and $250 for HD set.

somebody i know got something similar from china. it look like a router which connect the tv via the hdmi cable to the modem via cable or wireless. then it basically allow the user to tap into china cable tv, all the cctv, hbo, starmovie channels available free. because it china device, it cannot see bbc or cnn but there seem to have football channels available. because he just brought the device last week and only start using it, so not totally sure what the total channels available but i do know i can watch tv dramas via the china pptv.

the cost of the device much cheaper than the illegal setup box and i doubt it illegal as it didnt not tap into singtel and starhub transmission. i will update after he get me a set next month when he go china again. if can watch EPL thru that, then it will be great news. the problem with the device is that the langague is in chinese (which i have no problem), not sure can get english version.

by the way, illegal setup box cannot watch HD channels, so if football telecast via HD, then the box is useless. but other than that, $200 can watch many channels, even the horse racing channels are available. a neighbour had one, use to invite me to watch football together until the set blew a fuse last june.

If you want to watch HD channels you need a TV with a HDMI connection port & a HD version of the decoder hardware.

There are Illegal decoders that support HD channels. They are the newer & more expensive models of the decoder boxes.

I am using Starhubs original hardware & if I want to watch HD channels I would have to upgrade to a newer decoder boxes & pay extra $ each month to watch the HD channels. Since I watch mostly news channels, paying extra for the HD capability is I think not worth it.

It is because they are overpriced. Bring down the prices - reduce profit lah - and people won't want to circumvent the system.
