Passenger arrested after trying to choke flight attendant and saying plane ‘is going down’ on California flight, DOJ says​

The incident allegedly took place on a Frontier Airlines flight.

A California man is facing federal charges after he allegedly tried to choke a flight attendant and “said he was going to kill everybody” while on board a Frontier Airlines flight to San Francisco that had to be diverted on Monday, authorities said.
Charles Angel Salva, a 30-year-old from Fremont, made an initial court appearance Wednesday and was charged with interference with flight crew members and attendants, according to a news release from the US Attorney’s Office, Central District of California.
The airplane was climbing shortly after takeoff from Orange County, California, when flight attendants noticed oxygen masks in one of the plane’s rows were out of the overhead compartment. “Flight attendants investigated and discovered that Salva had his hand in the overhead compartment,” the US Attorney’s Office said.
A passenger told law enforcement that it appeared Salva was “claustrophobic” and “seemed like he wanted to get off the plane,” the US Attorney’s Office said, adding that the man got his hand stuck in the overhead compartment after he pulled the oxygen mask from there.

During the incident, Salva yelled obscenities at flight attendants and allegedly said, “We are all going to hell,” and “This airplane is going down,” the release said.
“Passengers helped restrain Salva, who broke out of flex cuffs and had to be restrained by a seatbelt,” the release said. “During the incident, Salva kicked one flight attendant approximately six times in the leg, causing apparent bruising and swelling, which required medical attention.”
The flight attendant whom he allegedly attempted to choke was also left with small marks to the neck, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
The flight attendants did not feel safe trying to put Salva back in his seat, and the flight was diverted to Ontario International Airport in California, the release said.
The FAA confirmed that the flight landed safely in Ontario International Airport around 6 p.m. after the crew reported a passenger disturbance and told CNN it will investigate the incident.
CNN has reached out to Salva’s attorney for comment and to Frontier Airlines for further information.
If convicted of the interference with flight crew charge, Salva would face a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
Salva is currently being held in the custody of the US Marshals Service, according to court records. His preliminary hearing is set for September 26.

INDIA: King Charles and Queen Camilla made a stopover in India on the way back from their royal tour to Australia and Samoa. According to a Reuters report, the royal couple made a stop in Bengaluru to visit the Soukya International Holistic Health Centre.

The couple have been to India several times and have been known to visit wellness centres in the country as well. The Ayurvedic retreat they went to this time offers Ayurvedic as well as homoeopathic treatments and yoga and meditation sessions.


CNN reported that a Buckingham Palace representative said on Wednesday: “Their Majesties had a short private stopover in India to help break the long journey back from Samoa. They return to the UK this morning.”

Soldiers caught having sex in Apache gunship​

Two soldiers were caught having sex in the cockpit of an Apache gunship.

The pair, who were believed to be under the influence of alcohol, were discovered in the act by their colleagues, The Sun reported.

They were allegedly engaged in intercourse in the back of a two-seater AH-64 gunship.

A ground crew is understood to have approached the aircraft to fit rain covers after a night-time servicing, but then reportedly heard unusual noises and saw that the rotors were swaying up and down.

An air safety report, which was seen by the newspaper after it became available owing to a technical glitch, said: “It became apparent that the rear cockpit was occupied by two people engaged in sexual intercourse. Both were naked from the waist down, the male in uniform, the female in civilian attire. They were ordered to exit the cockpit and get dressed.

“Both parties were serving soldiers. Both showed symptoms of intoxication.”

The gunship is said to have belonged to the Army Air Corps’ 653 Squadron but the soldiers were from a separate unit, thought to be Royal Artillery.

The report to the Military Aviation Authority added: “They were detained until the chain of command of 653 Squadron and their parent unit arrived.”

An Army source claimed the incident took place at the Otterburn range in Northumberland in 2016, adding that ground crews have been instructed to secure helicopters properly in the future.

In January a new Apache AH-64E attack helicopter declared “ready for front line duty” by the Army in October, was knocked on its side by strong winds at the Army Aviation Centre in Middle Wallop, Hampshire.

It is understood no one was injured during the incident, and that all other aircraft remained undamaged.

Apaches are considered robust enough to operate from the decks of ships, and are typically able to withstand rough weather.

The Ministry of Defence was contacted for comment.

Chinatown resident says neighbour pounds on wall because she cooks at home​

One Chinatown resident is at her wits' end after enduring years of noise disturbances from her next-door neighbour who appears to be upset because she cooks at home.

The 70-year-old retiree surnamed Li, who lives at Block 536 Upper Cross Street, told Shin Min Daily News that her neighbour started knocking on the wall in 2019, claiming that Li's cooking caused her flat to become "extremely hot".

While woman initially pounded on the wall during mealtimes, Li said she now does it more often and at odd timings.

"She is unhappy when I pray at home and when I watch TV. Sometimes I hear the harsh knocks at 1am or 5am, and the noise makes my heart pound in fright," Li added.

When Li confronted her neighbour over the noises on Nov 12, the latter came out of her house holding a laundry pole.

"Since last year, I've called the police numerous times, complained to the authorities and approached my MP for help.

"But the problem has gotten worse. She even told me: 'If you cook, I will continue to knock'," said Li.

Li added that they were supposed to attend mediation last November, but her neighbour did not show up.

Another resident living on the same floor, surnamed Lu, said she is also affected by the woman's noise disturbance.

"She often slams the door shut in the middle of the night. The loud bang startles me awake," said the 65-year-old retiree.

Lu claimed that the neighbour would also deliberately stomp her feet in front of her door and say it's 'dirty'.

She said the noise made her blood pressure rise, and she has also lodged complaints against the neighbour, but the situation has not improved.

The neighbour in question did not answer the door when Shin Min visited her flat on two separate occasions.

Who is Asma Assad, the London-born wife of Syria's deposed dictator?​

The British-Syrian wife of Bashar al-Assad is believed to have joined her husband and fled to Moscow.​

Bashar al-Assad has been overthrown after 13 years of brutal civil conflict in Syria, bringing to an end more than 50 years of Assad family rule.

The exact whereabouts of the deposed dictator's wife – London-born Asma al-Assad – is currently unknown. The only hint we have is from Russia's ambassador to international organisations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, who said on his Telegram channel that Moscow has granted asylum to the Assad family.

Asma has been repeatedly accused of attempting to sanitise the regime's violence and has found herself caught up in multiple controversies, both inside and outside of the violence in Syria.

This led to calls from the Liberal Democrats in 2017 for her to be stripped of her British citizenship, although prime minister Keir Starmer said on Monday that it was too early in a fast-moving situation to revisit that issue.

Asma, known as Emma​

Asma was born in the UK and raised in Acton, west London. She is the daughter of Sahar Akhras, a retired diplomat who served as first secretary at the Syrian Embassy in London, and Fawaz Akhras, a cardiologist.

While her parents were considered to be culturally conservative, they were eager for Asma to integrate and she was known as Emma at her local Church of England primary school.

Many recall her having very little interest in the Middle East growing up. "She was very English and seemed to want to have nothing to do with Syria," a family friend told the Economist in 2021.

After graduating from King's College London with a first-class honours degree in computer science, she joined banking firm JP Morgan.

Her mother was said to be very keen that she establish a relationship with Bashar, who was then second in line to succeed his father, Hafez. The pair met a few times in the 1990s when Bashar was studying to be an ophthalmologist in London.

Shortly after Bashar was appointed president in a sham election in 2000 following Hafez's death, Asma disappeared for three weeks without notice. When she returned to work, she said she had met a dashing Syrian, resigned and gave up her place at Harvard Business School.

When pressed on whether she was making the right decision, she reportedly responded: "Who would choose Harvard over love?"

'A rose in the desert'​

Asma spent her early years of marriage seemingly trying to soften the family's image, according to the Economist.

This PR drive continued despite the outbreak of pro-democracy protests in January 2011 – which sparked a brutal crackdown by the Assad regime on demonstrators – and came to a head when US PR company Brown Lloyd James arranged a cover story in Vogue in March that year.

A cover story titled "A rose in the desert” described her determination to make Syria into a "brand". The glowing article also praised the Assads as "wildly democratic", dubbing Syria "the safest country in the Middle East".

The piece sparked widespread condemnation, with the edition carrying the story eventually removed from circulation and deleted from Vogue's website.

The 'Imelda Marcos' of Syria​

As the situation in Syria deteriorated, Asma released a rare public statement in 2012, telling the Times newspaper of her "very busy agenda" that was "focused on supporting the various charities she has long been involved".

It went on to state that she was "equally involved in bridging gaps and encouraging dialogue".

However, a cache of 3,000 emails released by activists in Syria in March 2012 detailed a very different picture. According to The Guardian, the secret emails revealed that Asma continued to shop online for luxury goods from Chelsea boutiques and jewellery shops in Paris even after the uprising was in full swing. At this point, at least 8,000 people had died in the conflict.

Her apparent voracious shopping habit reportedly led Syrian diplomats to dub her Imelda Marcos, after dictator Ferdinand Marcos's wife, who was addicted to shoes.


Later that month, EU foreign ministers imposed a travel ban and asset freeze on Asma.

In April 2012, the wives of the German and UK ambassadors to the UK (Sheila Lyall Grant and Huberta von Voss Wittig) appealed to the dictator's wife to take action, urging her that her "public voice was needed".

At the point of the video's release, Asma stood beside her husband throughout a 13-month conflict, with 9,000 people declared dead.

By then, it was clear that any attempts to burnish the family reputation in the West had fallen flat.

Rejected offer of refuge​

In 2016, Asma told the press she had rejected a deal to offer her safe passage out of Syria in order to stay by her husband's side.

Speaking to Russian state TV channel Rossiya 24, she accused Western media organisations of "choosing to solely focus on the plight of refugees in rebel-held areas".

"I've been here since the beginning and I never thought of being anywhere else at all. Yes, I was offered the opportunity to leave Syria or rather to run from Syria. These offers included guarantees of safety and protection for my children and even financial security," she said.

"It doesn't take a genius to know what these people were really after. It was a deliberate attempt to shatter people's confidence in their president."

At that point, as many as 400,000 people were said to have died in the country's violence.

Cancer diagnosis​

In May this year, the Syrian regime announced in a statement that Asma had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia, an aggressive form of bone marrow and blood cancer.

While some questioned whether she would be able to receive treatment in Syria, officials said she would "adhere to a specialised treatment protocol that includes stringent infection prevention measures" and "will temporarily withdraw from all direct engagements".

It was the second time the Syrian first lady was diagnosed with cancer. In 2019, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fully recovered after receiving chemotherapy for a malignant tumour a year later.

'Not welcome in the UK'​

Asma has been the subject of three referrals to the Met Police’s war crimes team – in July 2020, January 2021 and December 2021 – which led to the Met opening a preliminary investigation into allegations she had incited and encouraged terrorist acts during the war.

If she had been charged, the Met could have sought her extradition or sought to have her stripped of her British citizenship. The Met has confirmed to Yahoo News on Tuesday there were "insufficient grounds to launch an investigation".

Nonetheless, the government has made it clear she is "not welcome" in the UK.

Foreign secretary David Lammy said on Monday: “I’ve seen mentioned in the last few days, Asma Assad potentially someone with UK citizenship that might attempt to come into our country, and I want it confirmed that she’s a sanctioned individual and is not welcome here in the UK.”

Starmer said in the wake of the Assag regime's overthrow that it was too early to say whether the government would strip Asma of her British citizenship.

"We are far too early in any decisions about anything," Starmer said. “At the moment we are hours, days into a fast-moving situation and that’s why it’s very important for us to continue to talk to our allies, including here in discussions I’ve been having today, to make sure that what happens next is peaceful.

“There’s a lot of moving parts in that, a lot of risks, I absolutely accept, and challenges, but they are going to be best met if we work with our allies towards that peaceful resolution and the rejection, the utter rejection, of terrorism and violence.”

SINGAPORE, Dec 26 — Scoot has apologised for an onboard altercation between two passengers that disrupted the disembarkation process of a flight from Xi’an, China, to Singapore.

The incident, which occurred on flight TR135 at Changi Airport, was caught on video and shared on online discussion platform Reddit on Tuesday.

In a statement to Singaporean Mandarin-language TV channel Channel 8, the low-cost carrier said, “While disembarking at Changi Airport, our crew was informed of a conflict between two passengers and intervened to control the situation in accordance with safety protocols. There were no further disruptions to the disembarkation process.”

Scoot also reaffirmed its commitment to passenger and crew safety, expressing regret for any inconvenience caused.

The video shows tensions flaring as a man in grey retrieved his luggage, only to be confronted by another man in black.

The argument quickly escalated into a physical fight, with the two wrestling while alarmed passengers watched.

A voice in the background can be heard shouting, “Stop fighting! There are children here!”

Despite the dramatic scene, Scoot confirmed the situation was brought under control, and no further incidents occurred.

A man begging for money along Waterloo Street was arrested by the police after some members of the public raised doubts about his behaviour.

The man, who has a 7cm tumour on his jaw, was seen sitting outside Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple on Dec 31, reported Shin Min Daily News. With legs of different lengths, he relied on crutches to walk.

Seated in front of a lamppost, the man would hold two to three packets of tissue in his hand, attempting to sell them to passers-by.

Upon seeing his disabilities, several people handed him cash, ranging from $2 to $10. They did not take any tissues from him.

According to Shin Min, the man received about $50 in the span of 10 minutes.

His actions eventually caught the attention of member of the public who called the police on him.

Officers arrived at the scene and took the man aside for questioning. When asked for his identification, the man pulled out a passport believed to be from China.

The questioning continued for about half an hour before the man was taken away in a police car.

A man surnamed Deng, who alerted the Chinese daily to the incident, was in the vicinity at about noon on Dec 31.

The 79-year-old said that he frequents the area, and did not recognise the man sitting at the lamppost.

"I suspected that he's a foreigner, so I called the police. But I told the officers not to give him a hard time if he's a Singaporean who needs help.

"However, if he's a foreigner begging for money illegally, then they should take action against him so as to deter others from doing the same."

Deng added that he has seen foreigners begging for money outside the temple, targeting devotees who wish to do a good deed.

"They sell tissues illegally and affect locals who make a living by selling tissue, so I hope the authorities can strengthen law enforcement against them."

Shin Min also spoke to a man surnamed Xu, who works nearby. He said he often sees unfamiliar faces begging for money outside the temples, especially on the first and fifteenth of the lunar month.

"We recognise the regulars who sell tissues here, so it's easy to spot a new face. They're sometimes alone or in groups, but they don't have a regular schedule," he said.

Man arrested as prohibited immigrant​

In response to AsiaOne's queries, the police confirmed that a 42-year-old man was arrested for being a prohibited immigrant under Section 8(3)(a) of the Immigration Act of 1959.

They added that investigations are ongoing.

Under the Act, a person who is not a Singapore citizen that falls into these categories can be arrested:

• Vagrants or habitual beggars
• Unable to support himself and his dependants, with no definite employment and will likely become a pauper
• Suffering from a contagious or infectious disease, which can make him a danger to the Singapore community
• Suffering from Aids or HIV
• Have been convicted of a crime in any country and sentenced to a prison term

The daughter of late Philippines dictator Ferdinand Marcos and her husband have been banned from drinking on airplanes and in airports after they got into a drunken brawl on a Jetstar flight.

Analisa Josefa Corr and James Alexander Corr caused a disturbance with their “disorderly behaviour” while intoxicated on a flight from Hobart to Sydney on 29 December, the Australian federal police said.

They had to be escorted off flight JQ720 by federal police.

Ms Corr was accused of “grabbing and shaking another passenger while exiting the aircraft toilet”.

“The pair were allegedly intoxicated and drinking alcohol they had brought with them onto the flight,” the federal police said.

The couple pleaded not guilty to charges of not complying with safety instructions and consuming liquor not served onboard.

Each charge carries a potential fine of up to A$13,750 (£6,925).

Ms Corr also denied a charge of assault onboard the aircraft. This charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison.

The couple were presented at the Downing Centre Local Court on Friday to vary their bail conditions and get their passports back. Their request was unopposed by a prosecutor for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.

A Jetstar spokesperson, without referring to the incident directly, said the airline “will never tolerate disruptive behaviour on our aircraft” and “the safety and wellbeing of customers and crew is our number-one priority”, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The case will be heard next on 24 February.

Ms Corr, 53, describes herself as an interior designer while her husband, 45, is a former soldier, Australian media reported.

The police have urged travellers to be “mindful of their behaviour at airports”. “You don’t want to start the new year with a significant fine or worse, behind bars,” Australian federal police Sergeant Luke Stockwell said.

SINGAPORE: A heated exchange erupted in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5) between Progress Singapore Party's (PSP) Leong Mun Wai and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah over the government’s efforts to address Singapore’s declining fertility rate.

Mr Leong, a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament, also drew a sharp rebuke from Speaker Seah Kian Peng for his “super long” preambles during clarifications.

The debate, which lasted more than seven hours, centred on a motion tabled by MPs Hany Soh (PAP-Marsiling-Yew Tee) and Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim (PAP-Chua Chu Kang), calling for the continued review and updating of policies to better support families and promote marriage and parenthood.

Mr Leong proposed amending the phrase “continued review and updating of policies” to “reimagination”, but the amendment was rejected and the original motion passed.

Ms Indranee opposed the amendment, saying that the government had already started the “reimagination process” in the form of Forward SG - an effort launched in 2022 to seek feedback on refreshing Singapore's social compact.

She added that the amendment was tied to a policy - PSP's Affordable Homes Scheme - which was problematic.

“In the context of this amendment, reimagination entails certain policies put forward by PSP, of which a key one is the Affordable Homes Scheme, which constitutes amongst other things, a raid on the reserves, and I cannot support it,” said Ms Indranee.

The scheme proposes that land costs are deferred when flat buyers buy a flat from the Housing and Development Board (HDB). Such costs will be paid only if the flat is sold after the minimum occupation period, Mr Leong had said previously.

Mr Leong said he had “many questions to ask”, the first being whether the current situation was a “national emergency” and if Ms Indranee agreed with such an assessment.

Prompted by the Speaker to bring up all his questions at once, Mr Leong was eventually warned by Mr Seah that he should seek clarifications and not make another speech.

The two spoke over each other briefly, with Mr Seah saying he could not tell what Mr Leong’s clarification was.

“I have said this many times to everyone, I’ll say it again. I allow you to make clarifications – as many as you want – but please make them and make it succinct,” said Mr Seah.

“Your preambles are super long … Don’t make mini-speeches. As with any other member who has spoken, you’re not allowed to make any more speeches.”

Mr Leong accused Ms Indranee of avoiding his questions, and challenged her on why Singapore does not compare itself to countries such as France, which has a total fertility rate (TFR) above 1.5.

“You have quoted a downward trend in the TFR as a global phenomenon. But other countries are able to maintain it at above 1.5 but we are 0.97 - does that difference mean it is a responsibility that the government has to take?” he asked.

Ms Indranee pointed out that France’s fertility rate has also dropped, mirroring the global decline.

“The suggestion seems to be that the government is responsible for 0.97 TFR. I think that that’s not the case,” she added.

She said that while it is a global trend affected by many factors, the government can do its best to make sure there is an environment that is as supportive of marriage and parenthood as possible, which is what it is currently trying to do.

“Any phenomenon that we observe, there’s always a systemic factor and there is a specific factor. Other countries have also experienced a general decline in the TFR, but if other countries are still maintaining at 1.5 and our TFR has gone right below 1 per cent, that is a difference,” said Mr Leong.

He added that the policies have not addressed the “specific factors”.

"You cannot just say that ‘oh everything is dropping, we can’t help it’, more or less, you’re saying we can’t help it, that cannot be the case, because then we will be really running towards extinction."

Ms Indranee pointed out that the government had never said that it “can’t help it”.

"As far as this government is concerned, we want to make a Singapore that is made for families and we are encouraging marriage and parenthood. It’s very odd because Mr Leong says the government says something when the government has not said any such thing," she added.

"Are policies working? We had policies in the past which took us up to a certain point. But remember, we recognise that changes need to be made and things need to be looked at afresh and that is exactly why we implemented Forward SG.

"And that’s why we embarked on the process of looking at what new policies we can introduce."

SINGAPORE: A heated exchange erupted in parliament on Wednesday (Feb 5) between Progress Singapore Party's (PSP) Leong Mun Wai and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah over the government’s efforts to address Singapore’s declining fertility rate.

Mr Leong, a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament, also drew a sharp rebuke from Speaker Seah Kian Peng for his “super long” preambles during clarifications.

The debate, which lasted more than seven hours, centred on a motion tabled by MPs Hany Soh (PAP-Marsiling-Yew Tee) and Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim (PAP-Chua Chu Kang), calling for the continued review and updating of policies to better support families and promote marriage and parenthood.

Mr Leong proposed amending the phrase “continued review and updating of policies” to “reimagination”, but the amendment was rejected and the original motion passed.

Ms Indranee opposed the amendment, saying that the government had already started the “reimagination process” in the form of Forward SG - an effort launched in 2022 to seek feedback on refreshing Singapore's social compact.

She added that the amendment was tied to a policy - PSP's Affordable Homes Scheme - which was problematic.

“In the context of this amendment, reimagination entails certain policies put forward by PSP, of which a key one is the Affordable Homes Scheme, which constitutes amongst other things, a raid on the reserves, and I cannot support it,” said Ms Indranee.

The scheme proposes that land costs are deferred when flat buyers buy a flat from the Housing and Development Board (HDB). Such costs will be paid only if the flat is sold after the minimum occupation period, Mr Leong had said previously.

Mr Leong said he had “many questions to ask”, the first being whether the current situation was a “national emergency” and if Ms Indranee agreed with such an assessment.

Prompted by the Speaker to bring up all his questions at once, Mr Leong was eventually warned by Mr Seah that he should seek clarifications and not make another speech.

The two spoke over each other briefly, with Mr Seah saying he could not tell what Mr Leong’s clarification was.

“I have said this many times to everyone, I’ll say it again. I allow you to make clarifications – as many as you want – but please make them and make it succinct,” said Mr Seah.

“Your preambles are super long … Don’t make mini-speeches. As with any other member who has spoken, you’re not allowed to make any more speeches.”
