<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->A SENIOR immigration officer with 30 years under his belt was yesterday charged with taking bribes totalling $140,000 to extend the social visit passes of China and Vietnam nationals.
Dong Ching Jit, 54, a deputy superintendent with the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), was accused of having taken payments of between $5,000 and $48,000 from Edmund Hoon Wai Kein between December 2004 and April 2005.
It is not known if Hoon has been charged yet.
It is also not clear at this stage how many social visit passes Dong had allegedly extended in return for money.
His job gave him oversight over a group of ICA staff and the day-to-day functions of granting social visit passes to foreigners.
He has been suspended from duty since March last year and his passport has been impounded.
Bail of $100,000 was set, and he will be back in court on Nov 18.
He is represented by lawyer Tng Kim Choon.
If convicted, Dong could be fined up to $100,000 and/or jailed up to five years on each corruption charge.
In August, another former senior ICA officer, Thong Sing Hock, 50, had his two-year sentence for offences, including some under the Immigration Act, increased to 33 months by the High Court after his unsuccessful appeal.
Thong had helped his China lover enter Singapore twice using a fake passport.
She had to get a false passport because she had been convicted here previously of overstaying.
