SINGAPORE: Singapore's Immigration and Checkpoint Authority has seized over 11 kilogrammes of methamphetamine hydrochloride, also known as 'Ice', with a street value of nearly S$1.7 million.

ICA officers seized the drugs when they busted two smuggling attempts on Wednesday.

The first attempt was foiled at 8.30am when ICA officers at Changi Airport Terminal 3 noticed in a routine check that the scanned images of a piece of luggage looked odd.

They noticed that the side and bottom of the bag were bulging.

They also found black tape and a powdery substance on the side linings of the bag.

The officers' suspicions were confirmed when they pried open the luggage and found packages of a white crystallised substance.

Preliminary tests conducted by Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers revealed that the white substance is 'Ice', weighing about 5.5 kilogrammes.

A 33-year-old Indonesian man was detained and handed over to CNB.

The second foiled smuggling attempt happened at about 1.30pm at Tuas Checkpoint.

ICA officers who were making departure checks found three slabs of 'Ice' hidden in the luggage of a 33-year-old Vietnamese woman.

The cache, which weighed about 5.7 kilogrammes, was found in secret compartments in the luggage.

The two persons arrested are being investigated for drug trafficking.

If convicted, they may face the death penalty under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
