'We issued a joint press statement, describing our individual detention – from three years to near 11 years – and called for the unconditional release of all detainees. We ended by calling Lee Kuan Yew a “political pimp.”'
~ Dr Poh Soo Kai, Barisian Socialis leader & Operation Cold Store detainee 1963–73

"His worst American newspaper critic a decade ago was William Safire. The oddest thing in his
attacks in his New York Times column on ‘Harry’ Lee (as his Anglicized given name would have it)
was that Bill was not only a great admirer of Richard Nixon, as was LKY, but for a good period of
time served as the late president’s ace speechwriter. Their politics were hardly dissimilar. Maybe
Bill’s attacks on Lee’s social-policy harshness were driven by the need to distance himself from
Watergate by taking it out on “The Little Hitler of Southeast Asia”, which was one of the titles of a
column in the New York Times."
~ Tom Plate quoting William Safire, "Giants of Asia: Conversations with Lee Kuan Yew"
These are the traits found in politicians of which LKY is a very capable and successful one. In Singapore, the people (most) admire and worship the man and just fall a little short of labelling LKY "Our beloved leader." He has the support of the media, the military, the business circles, the judiciary, all the civil institutions, even the unions. Some even attribute Singapore's financial success to him.
Cheers!
Sad if he really got what he wanted. The fear factor is almost all gone but not much love will remain. Some gratitude from the older generation maybe but little else.
