I don't think he is smart enough to make tongue-in-cheek comments .... but that comment very in his dept, his 'brainwaves' you know ..... dun pray pray, his children library at void deck idea was 'copied' by PAP okie, alas, his make M'sia our hinterland idea didn't work.... full of 'creative ideas' our ah chiam, veri likeable very chiam see tong....

I think he's smart enough. But perhaps not quick enough.

Chee by lah. Chiam is proposing renaming jurong industrial estate after Dr Goh, not renaming the whole jurong.

seriously, Jurong Industrial Estate very vague this day, where/what is JIE, the whole Jurong area is JIE?

since they have plans for the Jurong Lake District & considering Chinese Gdns, Japanese Gdns, Jurong Country Club & the vicinity got JTC, Science Centre etc almost all brainchild of GKS, maybe the Jurong Lake District can be associated with his name/memory .....

DURING the tumultuous mid-60s, I served in the Singapore Police Force. It was a time of racial tension and mistrust, industrial unrest, and "Konfrontasi".

On the occasions when I was assigned to be Dr Goh's temporary bodyguard, I saw how passionate he was in serving and ensuring Singapore's progress.

He never spoke much to us bodyguards around him; he was always deep in thought. But no matter how busy he was, he never forgot to enquire about our well-being. He made sure that his grassroots members took care of our dinner.

That was the kind of man he was: He looked stern, but was contemplative and caring.

In life, Dr Goh made many sacrifices in the interest and for the progress of Singapore. In death, let us keep his memory alive, perhaps by naming a street, road or building after him.

Or why not rename Jurong industrial estate after him? After all, it was Dr Goh who played the pivotal role in the transformation of swampland into the thriving hub it is today.

chiam is senile after this stroke and his wife is doing the speaking and thinking for him. you think the old chiam would sabo himself this way? this must be his wife's idea. she probably the one also ask chiam to accept kenneth jeyaretnam's deal to join forces with sda. a deal that puts sda at a disadvantage

I tend to share your thoughts.

But then again, SDA does not have any strong leaders other than Chiam. With him probably being senile, I do not see other good options for SDA other than to accept TRP's conditions.

I understand many people wanted to name something in his honour after his retirement but he was against it. He was even not happy when his niece wrote his biography few years ago.

That's GKS in essence, when reporters asked him whether he would write his memoirs after retirement, he dismissed the idea & replied abruptly & pointedly: No money in it ! (a short sharp end to endless waxing on, i think he mentioned something like only people like Kissinger can make $ from memoirs)

Point of correction, not niece, it was his son's second wife Ms Tan who wrote his biography. Prof Phua (aka Mrs Goh) wasn't pleased with the publicity, but it seems now, not to be outdone, 2 years ago she also quietly produced her own 'private account' of GKS which was not-for-sale but given out to friends & relatives who visited at the wake.

Actually that's in line with the Dr Goh persona i've heard so much about. He's a very private and practical man. Distant and cold even to old colleagues. Besides work, other things in life are just frivolities.
