I have been a non-resident for almost 3 decades.
A friend attended the Workers Party rally at Serangoon (within Aljunied GRC) on Apr 29, and "filed" this report.
I attended the WP rally at the Serangoon Stadium on 29th April. Here is my short take on the event.
The stadium was packed to the hilt and the estimate of the crowd size was about 50,000, including those on the outside of the stadium as they could not get in. The public address system was excellent, loud and clear, so that those outside could hear the speeches even if they cannot see the stage. (This was in pleasant contrast to the rather poor and tinny sound systems that I have experienced in past election rallies – at least on this score, the opposition parties have got the act together).
Speeches were very well delivered. The main speaker was Low Thia Khiang (LTK) who spoke in English first and ended the rally at precisely 10:00pm in Mandarin. I must say his English is much better than when I last heard him in 2006. Sylvia Lim (SL) spoke in Mandarin and English. And again commendably, her spoken Mandarin was very good, much better than when I last heard her in 2006. LTK and SL must have gone for language lessons!
Chen Show Mao (CSM) spoke rather slowly and deliberately. His messages were clear and the crowd was hushed in listening to him. A more cerebral speech than a rousing one.
The surprise for me were the other 2 candidates of the WP in the Aljunied GRC. Muhamad Faisal (MF) spoke in Malay first, then English – excellent English and good delivery. He is 35 years old and has a Bachelor of Science in psychology from the Monash University, Australia. Not your token Malay candidate and not a lightweight at all.
The best speaker in the sense of rousing the crowd was Pritam Singh (PS). He spoke in a way that really engaged the crowd who responded very well to him. He is 34 years old and has a B.A. from NUS, a M.A. from King’s College, London University and will be finishing his J.D. (Juris Doctorate, a law degree) from the SMU this semester. Again, very impressive and a surprise to me, just as MF above.
I have heard LTK and SL before and they are known candidates. CSM has been well covered in the media lately. But MF and PS really bring strengths to the team and not just token minority add-ons. Kudos to LTK and the WP to have assembled such a strong team to contest the Aljunied GRC.
I have commented more on the speaking ability of the candidates. The substance of their speeches were excellent too. As you may have already read about what they have said, I will not dwell on that but have appended a rally report in the article below.
If we wake up on 8th May with the score at 87-0, then all I can say is that Singaporeans have rejected a very viable voice of the opposition in the WP team for the Aljunied GRC. And that, in my opinion, will be a sad loss to Singapore and detrimental to the country as a whole in the years ahead.
WP: PRESSURE ON GEORGE YEO, GRC SYSTEM
Yet another capacity crowd of over 50,000 turned up at the Serangoon Stadium as speakers Sylvia Lim, Low Thia Khiang and Chen Show Mao mocked their PAP opponent George Yeo’s earlier comments about the WP forcing an “emotional dilemma” on Aljunied voters. Ms Lim said that residents need not worry about Mr Yeo as he would be given a cushy job in a GLC or statutory board if he lost, and asked the voters to “help him to an early retirement”. Her words were greeted by thunderous cheering and applause.

The Serangoon Stadium was packed to the brim with cheering WP supporters
Mr Low spent a large part of his speech attacking the GRC system, giving details of how the PAP government had been guilty of gerrymandering since the 1980s. He said that the GRC system was against the spirit of democracy and that he had been forced to leave his Hougang ward to contest in Aljunied because there was an urgent need for the WP to win a GRC.
Mr Chen asked the crowd if their lives had improved in the past five years and whether they were more hopeful about the future compared to five years ago. He said that the WP could offer Singaporeans hope, and urged the crowd to vote for the WP so as to fulfil the party’s vision of a First World Parliament.
In addition, Mr Low also introduced the entire Aljunied team, which includes Ms Lim, Mr Chen, Pritam Singh and Mohammad Faisal Manap – all of whom made fiery speeches. In particular, Mr Singh called on Singapore’s youths to “take ownership” of their own country.
