I am curious... Does LKY speak hakka dialect at home? Anyone? Any inside information? Or has he been gang-tang-nized (westernized) all the way?

I've heard since I was a kid, that Lee K.Y. speaks a mixture of Malay and English at home cause though his grandfather was hakka, his grandmother was nonya. Hearsay folklore only, to be verified.

As a child growing up in Medan.... bahasa indonesia & hakka.
As a teenager man in Singkieland..... uses hakka to communicate with the fellow clansmen in Chinatown.
After returning from Oxford........ speaks angmo 99% of the time.
As an MM...... speaks rubbish 101% of the time :D

I can't remember clearly but LKY book did mention that he has baba blood. ( grandmother? )

It does. If he has 50 percent hakka blood in him, and he speaks malay and english ALL THE TIME with his family when he's young, shows that he is from a family of sell outs.

Some years ago I attended a Lunar New Year dinner at the Dabo clan association, LKY was seated together with the clan elders at the VVIP table, the conversation among those elders at that table was mainly in the hakka dialect....... I wonder whether LKY understood the conversations?

No he does not. Both son and father are useless Hakka speakers.

Dun speak the lingo doesn't mean dun understand it......... from wat i noe is tat dey can comprehend wat was said but would rather not speak in the dialect coz dey find it difficult to express their views accurately using hakka.

Chinese should be proud of their mother tongue be it Hakka, Teochew, Hokkien, Cantonese....etc...NOT JUST SPEAK MANDARIN ONLY!

You don't need to understand Hakka dialect to understand " kiwi the soles of your shoes " talk!

Anyway, Hakka is an unrooted, rolling moss accumulated or corrupted tongue. There's no such province or city as Hakka (there's Canton province or Teochew city or Hokkien province), it's lingo changes as they shifted from north to south China, and finally out of China into South-East Asia. You go China and try to speak Hakka or identity yourself as Hakka, you'd be laughed at (perhaps in courteous silent laughter). Hakka means nomadic and being guests everywhere without roots.

They are very tight with money. Don't expect a good deal when doing business with them

I like Hakka finance managers..... they make sure that my AR is maintained at low level and always manage to get better deals from supliers :D
