Was it in as tiny a totally built up country with as little access to land and natural resources as Singapore?

in the past they could just go back to the countryside to slow down a little and life was sustainable because a handful of rice, a few eggs, chickens from the chicken run behind the house and vegetables from the garden means that you don't really need to work for anybody to survive.
