Just came back from China, and found the place bustling and very modern. Went to couple of wholesale market in Guangzhou. Was thinking of getting stuff there to be shipped to Australia. A couple of friends said it is going to be troublesome. Basically, hire a container, hire a place to put the container in the port, and collect/pack you stuff in it, then ship over and clear customs over here. All up around $2000. Anyone had any contacts of experience in arranging something like this from China to Australia?

Not sure on the transportation side, but I think you might kenna the 5% import tax + 10% GST on top.

Not to mention if you might require the relevant permits for the stuff you buy and AQIS holding periods if it so happens to have any organic content.

Yes was thinking that would be a possibility. I need to find out what are the procedure and the time /effort that would be involved in doing something like this.

Depending on your volume. A 20f container may cost about $2k packing, fumigation and shipping from China to Australia port. $2.5k from Australia incld GST, clearance and unload to your door step. Time taken to ship about 2 weeks.

You should get the goods direct from the factory. Pls get good quality goods to make it worthwhile.

So 4.5K in total for a 20f container?

If you send by volume (say 15cubic meter), it is going to be cheap in China but very expensive in Australia. Aust charge about $160-180 per cubic meter. Also other charges such as container unloading fee etc.

I see, where can I find more information on this? Any import/export company can handle this? Or need specialised ones?

If I were you I wouldn't go for Crown.. This is a reputable firm who charge reputable price normally double or triple the cost. Try seeking an agent from GZ, any supplier can arrange for your shipment, however, they are not responsible once it reached Australia port. Thereafter you should arrange for a custom broker to clear the goods for you. Once the goods are shipped, you should received Bill-of-Ladin, list of goods, commercial invoice (pls apply magic on this) and other necessary cert ie fumigation certificate. You then forward these to your custom broker.

If you wana save more - omit the custom broker and DIY. If your gf is too free, she can arrange quarantine and clearance on your behalf to save half the cost.. thereafter get few china student removalist to delivery to your door step. I hope this helps..

Happy shipment !
