Even current trend is govt/NEA is staying away from managing the hawker centres and wet markets.. just look at Seng Siong and kopitiam square sagas..
This is THE way the PAP govt is "de=centralising" their involvement in "peasants" lives causing "peasants" to fare for themselves tossing them into the unknown charters of market forces at work at the lowest entry level for peasants, i.e. wet markets and hawker centres...

Answer is boycott those high rental/food price stall. When the operator cannot survive they will automatically leave and the stall will vacant.
But need all to work together and boycott for at least 6 month. But in Singaporean chances working together are zero base on statistic. Just look at SMRT and SBS kiling each others until LKY come out. Now Starhub and Singtel also killing eacb others.
Now is the situation is cartel or landlord work together but the stall operator jumping into Pirate ship hoping to dig some gold. But in the end no gold on the ship but have to join Pirate to rob from peasant to survive.
As long as peasant are willingly to be rob the stall will survuve and the food price will keep going up.

"Hawkers" in its traditional definition, didn't pay rent or license fee(s). Today, this is impossible. "Give to Caesar what is Caesar's" has been perfected, there's no getting around that.
Let's look at something that is MORE IMPORTANT than economics and governance - your health, or your loved ones' health if you don't give a shit about your own. MSG, re-used cooking oil, and indifference to hygience type F&B employees/operators who don't give a shit about quality of food - quite common eh? So long as cash is paid, they don't care what happens next.
It was only one or two generations ago that people mostly ate homecooked food. They packed leftovers or made sandwiches to take to work (most places in the world are still like that.) And they bought these ingredients from family-run or owner-operated shops and market stalls. Maybe we can't all return to that all the time, but if we let the present trend go on, we're only fucking ourselves.
Cook a meal at home and invite your friends. Pack your lunch to work, even if its fresh fruit (hell, that's better for you.)
Ya gotta start somewhere.
