In Germany, if they increase their salaries, they will be out of office in the next election. In Singapore, they ask one another to increase one another's salary and use the whip if there is dissension and 60.1% of the electorate will still vote them in because candidacy is based on scholarship. Scholarship is viewed very highly back from the days of the imperial exams. As long as candidacy is based on scholarship no question will be asked.
