The vast majority of the human race falls within a narrow band where intelligence is concerned. Only a few are above this band. A medical doctor, an engineer etc all fall within this band. Many assume that they are above this narrow band but they got into these profession because they displayed discipline, diligence and were single minded. Interestingly intelligent tend to be awkward, impatient and nerdy at times. If they are socially apt, they will be picking the women and not the other way around.

In essence partners seek out other partners and the drivers are usually success, potential and compatibility. When people say they prefer intelligent people, it is a euphemism.
