Last week in Bangkok, was talking to a Brit girl who was lamenting how London was going to upstage the Beijing's Games.
Looking at the Games as a whole including the now closing Ceremony, one wonders who can ever top the Beijing Games.
Truly a superlative performance by the most populous nation. Spectacular organisation, beautiful men and women, great colours and uniforms, costumes, exotic props and extraordinary effort and all with flowing grace.
The Chinese spent between USD40-60 billion (no one will know for sure) and had the services of millions of cheap (if not free) volunteers. It has the financial muscle and the popular will to succeed as a matter of national pride.
Britain, on the other hand, do not even come close to a fraction of the budget the Chinese expended (and this does not even account for inflation between now and 2012). It has to do it at the British level of costs and without the mass (free) support of the British people. London is one of the most expensive capitals of the world, and one of the most gridlocked. There is no way the Brits can centralise most of the Games the way the Chinese did..the facilities are just not there. Again it's national pride, not cow sense that drives nations to bid for the games and expect to break even. With hotel prices that are legendary in London I wonder how the hundreds of thousands that are coming for the games are going to be house. And really..if David Beckham and "A Whole Lotta Love" are the only ideas that the London organising committee can come out with... the 2012 games may only click with those who enjoy the quirkiness of The Goon Show.
Unless they subcontract the whole show to the Chinese !!
