What a load of bollocks! The Singapore team in the Malaysia Cup era is definitely stronger than this rojak half-fucked UN trash we call a national team. Fandi & Co had certainly no problems giving teams like Pinoyland and Brunei 5 or more goals without reply but the current team struggles to overcome the same shit teams. The Golden Generation had not won international tournaments, but let us not forget that Thailand was a regional powerhouse and Malaysia and Indonesia were considerably stronger back then. Send our joke of a national team back to the 90s and they would have lost cock standing. Even the coach was better. Douglas Moore was definitely a better coach than that Serb bore. Anyone who thinks that the likes of Fandi, Sundramoorthy, Malek, Tong Hai and David are inferior to Precious, Qiu Li, Duric and their jokers-in-crime ought to have his head examined.

There is a difference between fantasy and reality.

Fantasy: SG team during M-League days are stronger then SG team today

Reality:
Regional titles
SG team during M-league era: 0
SG team post M-league era: 3

Asian Cup Qualifier
SG team during M-league era: Gets kicked out during the first round everytime without fail
SG team post M-league era: 1 win away from qualifying from Asian Cup

World Cup Qualifier
SG team during M-league era: Gets kicked out during the first round everytime without fail
SG team post M-league era: Made it to rd 3 of WC qualifier for the 1st time

Let me put it this way, we have never even come close to making it to Rd 3 of the WC qualifiers. And we almost qualified for the last Asian Cup needing a win against Jordan. Yes they choked but look at it this way, No SG team in the past have ever gotten anywhere near where this team has been to.

Sure they are still not world class but compared to the days where we were still competing in the Malaysian Kelong league. We have come a long way. Back in the day we could even freaking win the Sea games, now we won the Suzuki/Tiger Cup 3 times. Sure MY won it this time round, doesn't mean we cannot win it back. For the record, Thailand 4 titles, SG 3 titles, MY and Vietnam 1. I don't think we are doing too badly.

What rubbish! Singapore were fourth at the asian games in 1966 and we were ONE match away from qualifying for the 1980 olympic games.

Our FTs-aided 'wins' in the ASEAN cup are tainted just like our 'victories' in table tennis. Hollow and unappreciated by most of the local population.

The FTs-aided may have won more regional titles but the dont mean shit to real fans of football here.

Avramovich's boring kiasu kiasi tactics + mechanical robotic players + FTS= 1 fan only (fatso Char_Azn)

Even if they win the world cup they will be never be loved by singaporeans like our malaysia cup heroes (except fatso Char_Azn).

FAS realised as much and so we are back in the malaysia cup. Thank the football gods for that!

a note regarding Singapore's progress of WC qualification in 2010.

here's what happened:

we were drawn with Palestine.

First round - we won 4-0 in Qatar - in a closed door match. Attendance =75

Return leg - we are awarded the match bcos Palestine no show.

Mudland - they were beaten Baharin 4-0 away, drew 0-0 in mudland. Bahrain - for your info, is a strong opponent.

---

2nd rnd playoff:

we played against Takjikistan - won overall 3-1. Drew 1-1 away

3rd rnd.

we were placed in a group with Saudi Arabia, Lebonon, Uzbekistan.

Lost 2-0 to Saudi Arabia away. Won 2-0 against Lebanon at home. Lost 7-3 against Uzbekistan at home, We threw away the match against Uzebkistan becos we fielded an ineligible player (WTF FAS?) 3-0 automatically awarded against us.

Lost 3-0 against Suadi Arabia at home. Awarded the match to Saudi Arabia because one player Qiu Li deemed not qualified. Won 2-1 away to Lebanon.

Finished 3rd in the group and balek kampong.

===

we started the S-league in 1996. Lets look at our progress:

2006, 2002, 1998

1998 -

Both finished last of their respective groups.

Mudland - finished last in their group of Kuwait, China, HK. Played 6 won none.
Singapore - last in group of Japan, Oman, India. Played 6 won 1.

===

lets go back to 1990 and 1994 WC qualifiers - when we are still in Malaysia Cup.

1990

We finished below mudland (3rd). In the group - S Korea, Mudland, Nepal, India.

we played 6 won 2. Mudland played 6 won 3. We

1994

we finished third in group comprising N korea, Qatar, Indon, Vietnam. We played 8 matches. Won 5. Winning % = 62%. This is the year we won the Malaysia Cup.

Mudland finished third in their group comprising Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Macau, Kuwait. Played 6 won 2.

I agree with everything you said.... except that we did qualify for the 1980 olympics. Iran withdrew because of the whole Ayatollah Khomeini thing ...

I don't think its fair to say this current team is stronger just because we reach the 3rd round?
It used to be 1st round, 2nd round followed by world cup. There was no 3rd round 4th round !
In 78, we were one win away from the 2nd round, A 2nd round of only 5 teams. We lost to hongkong, a team of expatriates from england. One could argue we were a lot closer then...

The best way to compare past and present is to look at our records against other countries. If other countries has improved, then so should we !!!...
In the late 70s we beat china twice, we beat japan, we beat north korea, we beat thailand, and we always beat Philipines by at least 5 goals.... This current squad is not even close....

Mr Char_Azn,

if i remember correctly, spore fare worse the filipinos in the last tiger/suzuki cup. That is how far spore had fallen in the last 20 years.

One cannot generally just compare yesteryear results to more recent results as a gauge to compare the teams. To speak the true, the whole region football had turn upside down. In yesteryears, Msia, Thais, Indons and Spore were the best teams in the region while the burmeses, laotians, filipinos and vietcongs were the whipping boys.

In term of technical skills, the team of yesteryear were street ahead of the current modern footballers. Msia of the late 80s were much better than spore(IHMO). FAS stagnant under the stewardship of ho peng kee, the sleague were a joke and being able to bet on sleague didnt put interest on the game itself but only attract gamblers to the terraces. 9 out of 10 spectators in sleague have a spools betting tickets in their wallet while they sit on the viewing gallery.

Mind you, even during the days of malaysia cup, local football league were well attended by paying spectators on saturday afternoon. I often travel to toa payoh stadium to watch bleastier home matches, the viewing terraces fill to the brink and many spectators had to sit on the running tracks under the hot afternoon sun. Not many complain as most attend for the love of the game. Yes, bookies can be found on the terraces accepting bets but gamblers not even 2% of the total spectators. KNN, those days police and safsa were the worst teams in the league.

pls dont blame the english football easily available on tv that cause the decline of local football. english football had nothing to do with decline of local football, the decline were due to the imcompetence of local football administrators. Another problem with local football are the heavy influence of Spools. I strongly believe that since 94 till now, the kelong are no longer cause by players not playing to their full potential but the men in black being influence by spools to fix results. I had seen to many sleague matches evenly match in the first 45min but after the break, one side will collapse due to some blantant bias refereering decision by the men in black.

Fourth is fourth. Take that!:oIo::oIo:

Can the current team even come close?

And as for the irrelevant list of palyers you mentioned, all except maybe deco and senna were either raised in or had some links to the countries they represented.

Many countries use naturalized players, but no one else in the whole world except us blatantly and shamelessly buy players to nearly fill the WHOLE team.

Had FIFA not tightened the rules, a team made up entirely of foreigners would have been a reality.

Uniquely singapore!
