HONG KONG: Former Hong Kong actress Yammie Nam, known for playing the Spider Demon in the 1995 film “A Chinese Odyssey”, recently revealed that she was once raped in Singapore, reported Hong Kong media.
Nam said the incident, which left her emotionally unstable, happened many years ago, when she went to Singapore to visit her friend who was filming there.
She said her rapist had claimed he was drunk, when he made his way into her room at a rented house one night and raped her.
“I was afraid I’d get pregnant after I was raped … so I went to see a doctor in Singapore the next day,” said Nam, adding that she also took medication in a bid to avoid pregnancy.
Nam explained that she did not go to the police as her rapist was a powerful figure in the film industry and she didn’t want to create any trouble.
When questioned about the reliability of her account, the 50-year-old said: “Why would I lie about this?”
Nam was once known for her beauty in Hong Kong, and acted alongside top stars like Andy Lau as well as Chow Yun Fat.
She appeared in the popular 1992 drama “The Greed of Man” and went on to do a number of films, before fading from the limelight in the late 90s.

While she was resting, the drunken man entered her room with a stolen key and performed the indecent act. Afraid of drawing unwanted attention, Yammie decided against filing a police report, believing that the man acted only out of drunkenness. She obtained a medical checkup and emergency contraception soon afterwards. Although she did not suffer further physical harm, her spirit was badly shaken. Admitting to suicide attempts, Yammie displayed wrists covered with slit marks self-inflicted with razor blades.
Having suffered similar humiliation in an abduction incident in the 1990s, Carina Lau (劉嘉玲) was completely devastated upon hearing Yammie’s story. “I am very worried about her condition.
