So what could have driven the 15-year-old boy to allegedly chop his mum, Madam Lam Lim Kam, and 12-year-old sister Kan Chun Yuen to death?
That was the question on the minds of the Hong Kong police after the boy called them to confess his crime. Police were unable to get his statement and are getting a mental assessment.
He was still in a daze, and kept repeating to himself: "Slash them to death. It's better if we have fewer people in the world", reported Apple Daily. The boy kept repeating the line that was said to be from one of his favourite comics by Japanese artist Fujiko Fujio.
The boy had called the police to say he had hurt his hand - and that he'd chopped his mum and sister to death at home. After receiving the boy's call, police found him at a park in Tsuen Wan at about 4am, about half an hour after he allegedly committed the crime.
A bloodstained chopper and glove were found in the boy's bag. Another bloody glove lay nearby, reported South China Morning Post. When police broke into the family's flat, they found Madam Lam and Chun Yuen, dead in a pool of blood on the living room floor.
The mother and daughter had made their way there after being attacked in the bedroom. Their heads had nearly been severed and blood splattered over the walls. The boy's father, who had taken a call from him earlier, was at work in the family's 24-hour restaurant across the road from the flat in Heung Wo Street.
No charges have been laid. In New York, a similar crime happened on Thursday when a 14-year-old allegedly set his home ablaze after killing two of his younger siblings and slitting his own throat, reported AP. The two sisters, Brittany, 10, and Melony, 7, had their throats slit.
Police later found the bodies of two-year-old brother Jermaine and the body of 33-year-old mum Leisha Jones. Meanwhile, in Texas, a mum told a phone-line operator that she strangled her two young children on Monday because they were autistic. Saiqa Akhter, 30, has been charged with a single count of capital murder in the deaths of her two-year-old daughter and five-year-old son, police said.
