The reason why I stopped going to my cardiologist was because I was looking for a long term cure to my problem. My cardiologists was ok when it comes to putting in stents /angioplasty & recommending medication like vastarel, amaryl, plavix, statins,..., but was lacking when it came to recommending details on diet, exercise, supplements. In other words a typical medical practioner in the Spore health system. Never mind the high cost.
If you go to Malaysia there are doctors who actualy do a better job & they are also cheaper
One of the most common drugs a doctor will prescribe for cholesterol are statins. Commonly brand names: Lipitor, Mevacor, Pravochol, Zocor, Lescol, Crestor, Altocor, Pravigard, Advicor, Baycor, Lovastatin, .. These drugs are big business and in Spore health care is all about money.
If you are taking these drugs, better read up & understand the side effects of this class of drugs
Why are Statins bad for you?
1) Interfere with liver function
2) Interfere with sex hormones
3) interfere with cells ability to fight cancer
4) create a CoQ10 deficiency
5) deplete vitamin E & A (causes cancer)
6) Decrease ability of insulin to metabolize sugars(promotes arteriosclerosis, diabetes,)
7) Increased risk of nerve damage(polyneuropathy)
8) Cause Amnesia
9) create a selenium deficiency
What alternatives are there for lowering cholesterol
1) fibre e,g, Profibe( http://www.iherb.com/CerBurg-ProFibe-454-g/10780?at=0 )
2) Vitamin B3 e.g. Niacin time(a time release product from Carlson, http://www.iherb.com/Carlson-Labs-Niacin-Time-500-mg-500-Tablets/9202
3) Red yeast(statin is derived from red yeast but the natural form is safer)
Wakunaga Kyolic Formula 107 Red yeast formula which contain garlic & red yeast. This product is recommended because it doesn't have citron which is carcinogenic. I've seen the Wakunaga brand being carried locally by Nature's Farm or you can get it at iHerb, http://www.iherb.com/Wakunaga-Kyoli...hytosterols-Formula-107-80-Capsules/4587?at=0
4)policosanol (http://www.iherb.com/Jarrow-Formulas-Ultra-Policosanols-10-mg-100-Softgels/266?at=0)
5) lycopene.
For reducing LDL cholesterol 60 mg a day is recommended. If you are allergic to tomatoes you can consider
http://www.iherb.com/Carlson-Labs-Lycopene-15-mg-180-Soft-Gels/8437?at=0
I'm not allergic to tomatoes so can take the cheaper tomatoe based products like http://www.iherb.com/Healthy-Origins-Lyc-O-Mato-15-mg-180-Softgel-Capsules/4136?at=0
6) Vitamin C This vitamin is water soluble & will exit from the body, so look for a product which is time released
http://www.iherb.com/Natural-Factors-Vitamin-C-Time-Release-1000-mg-180-Tablets/2556?at=0
7) Vitamin E
Avoid the artificial Vitamin E & go for the natural product which has both tocotrienol & tocopherol which is more active.
http://www.iherb.com/Carlson-Labs-E-Gems-Elite-400-IU-120-Softgels/2789?at=0
This is a very important vitamin so don't ignore.
8) Sytrinol :
9 Pantethine
10) magnesium
Most people are deficient in this vital ingredient. Its an essential & a cheap supplement. I take about 400 mg/day. The sources I've read recommend 800mg to 1000mg/day. It also helps with sleep. Had trouble with deep breathing until I increased my intake to 400mg
11) Combination formulas
It is time consuming & costly to take so many products. There are products with a combination of ingredients, I'm experimenting with some of these products
http://www.iherb.com/Source-Naturals-Heart-Science-120-Tablets/1232?at=0
Disclaimer: If you are currently taking statins & want to reduce your dependance, work with your doctor or go find a more understanding doctor. You probably have to find one in Malaysia
If you are using Statins its important to replace the CoQ10 that statins deplete. Not all Coq10 products are equal. There are issues with bioavailability. I'm trying out Jarrow Q-abosrb products, http://www.jarrow.com/qh-absorb
Local stores don't stock the range of products like they do in the US.
Other than the range they offer discounts on some products if you get more than 4 pcs of some products. You even get further discounts discounts(4% - 16%) based on the amount of your total order. I maximise the discounts by ordering at least US$350 worth of products. The stocks usually have a shelf life of 2 to 3 years.
iHerbs current shipping rate is US$18 by DHL or UPS & takes 3 to 4 days to reach Spore. In Spore DHL/UPS will will charge gst & an SIN$10 admin fee. They sometimes even have specials like US$10 shipping
Tip: If you want to receive a further discount of US$5.00 use the discount code "KOK015" kilo-oscar-kilo-zero-one-five.
