Wedding bells are ringing for local actress Tay Ying and her boyfriend, chef-turned-actor Wu Sihan.
The couple are getting married in June this year, following a one-year engagement. Wu proposed on 20 March, 2024, following the hard-launching of their relationship in January.
Wu planned the proposal after he sought the blessing of Tay's parents – veteran actors Zheng Geping and Hong Huifang.
He told CNA Lifestyle, "I did seek her father’s approval face-to-face. Her mother was in Taiwan filming for a drama, so I called her. She was like, 'Why are you asking this kind of stupid question?'"
Tay had some requirements for the proposal – she wanted it to be "intimate, not over the top", and the ring had to be simple, classic".
"I told him I must have a photographer and videographer to capture the moment," she added.
Wu admitted that it was hard to surprise her because "she’s very sharp". So, he tried to create a work setting so she would be "very focused".
He asked a photographer friend to set up a photo shoot in a studio on the pretence that it was for content creation. Then, she was led to a room where a photo montage of their time together played on a projector screen, and Wu appeared with a bouquet of flowers.
Tay's friends and family also appeared without her noticing them.
The surprise proposal was a success as Tay cried.
She said, "I didn’t believe it because you wouldn’t usually expect proposals to be in the morning – this happened around 10am."
The pair went public with their relationship in January 2024 by posting a photo of them in a loving embrace on Instagram. The revelation came amid rumours that they had been dating for years.
According to a Lianhe Zaobao report, rumours swirled as early as August 2022, when photos of their Australia trip - posted separately - featured the same things, like the car or the window stickers.
However, both Tay and Wu never appeared in the photos together.
Hong also remained tight-lipped when asked about the pair's dating status.
