THE other offences that Chia Leng admitted to were theft of $2,000 from a Chinese national at Goodwood Park Hotel on May 18, 2007; $343 worth of beer and stout from Cold Storage at Parkway Parade; a box of bird's nest worth $69 from Guardian Pharmacy; and $80 worth of items from Marks and Spencers in Orchard Road between May last year and March this year.
Asked if he had anything to say, Chia told the judge that he was confident that three years would be long enough for him to cure his depression and sickness.
</td></tr> </tbody></table> This is one of the conditions placed on Chia Leng's 36 months' probation, after he pleaded guilty to six charges of mainly theft. Thirteen other charges were considered. Chia, 45, has been jailed four times previously for theft. District Judge May Mesenas also accepted the prosecution's request that Chia be reviewed quarterly, and for his attending psychiatrist to submit a psychiatric report.
The elder brother of Chia, who was found to be suffering from a major depressive disorder, was in court to sign a $5,000 bond to ensure his good behaviour.
The court heard that Chia was at GNC Orchard Shopping Centre on June 6, 2006 when he used the sales staff's $700 cellphone on the pretext that his phone battery was low, and he was waiting for an urgent message. Chia absconded with the phone.
On July 1 that year, he used the same ruse on an employee of Simply Nails at Holland Shopping Centre and walked out with her $400 phone after saying that he would be back.
