SINGAPORE : The town council under the new Aljunied GRC MPs of the Workers' Party will take on all existing agreements of the Aljunied Town Council, said the Housing and Development Board (HDB).
These include the existing tenancies for three offices.
The HDB released a statement on Friday in response to media queries on the handover of Aljunied Town Council following the General Election on May 7.
It said the Town Councils Act lays out the procedures for the handover of town councils after the General Election.
For Aljunied Town Council, the HDB has met up with the five elected MPs for Aljunied GRC on May 10 upon their request.
The housing board then discussed with them the procedures for the handover of the town council.
Currently, the Aljunied Town Council operates three offices that have been rented from HDB on three-year tenancies which will expire between November 2011 and May 2012.
On a related note, the HDB said one of the elected MPs for Aljunied GRC, Mr Low Thia Khiang, was quoted in the news media that he had to vacate the Hougang Town Council office and build a new office after he won the elections for Hougang following the 1991 General Election.
The HDB clarified that the office was not located within the Hougang single-member constituency (SMC).
It said prior to the 1991 election, Hougang Town Council had been managing three SMCs - Hougang, Punggol and Paya Lebar SMCs.
The Hougang Town Council office was then located in Punggol SMC, which following the 1991 elections was subsumed under Cheng San GRC.
The HDB then gave approval for a new town council office to be built at Hougang Avenue 2, within the boundary of Hougang SMC, to serve the needs of the Hougang Town Council.
The Ministry of National Development (MND) has requested all elected MPs for their arrangements on the formation of the new towns. These will be gazetted after the 14th day from the publication of results of the General Election, as prescribed by the Town Councils Act.
The MND and HDB are working closely with all elected MPs and other stakeholders on the formation of new town councils to ensure a smooth handover of town council functions for the benefit of all HDB residents.
