Fei Siong Food Management, which runs Ci Yuan Hawker Centre at Hougang, among other establishments, has received overwhelming response for its entrepreneurship programme to train hawkers.
Eighteen out of over 60 applicants were selected last year and the company continues to receive over 40 enquiries although the programme has been suspended.
One of the hawkers who went through the programme is Miss Joey Teo, a former logistics assistant.
She is now selling satay bee hoon and laksa at Ci Yuan Hawker Centre.
The selection is stringent.
Factors such as personality and attitude are considered, said Mr Tan Kim Siong, managing director of Fei Siong Food Management.
“We also made sure that they are aware that it’s a lot of manual work and hours are long,” he added.
