A MAN arrested for failing to appear in court for parking offences sparked a manhunt in Hougang Street 51 when he escaped from police custody - still handcuffed.

The 28-year-old, who goes by only one name Nicholas, turned himself in at the Ang Mo Kio North Neighbourhood Police Centre six hours later.

Aetos auxiliary police officers had gone to his home in Block 566 Hougang Street 51 at around 2pm on Thursday to arrest him for being a no-show in court.

As he was being handcuffed, he struggled and fled the scene.

The police were called and the five-hour search mounted in the area included officers from the police Special Operations Command, who arrived in four of their distinctive red vehicles.

Nicholas' photos went up in nearby coffee shops and residents were asked to look out for him.
