Famous in the 70's and very down to earth. Great band !!!

Senja itu kau berdua
Bersama teman hati mu
Yang kau katakan pada ku
Bila engkau tersenyum
Dan menjeling pada ku
Tersentuh jua hati ku

Dalam tenang ku gelisah
Senyum mu ku balas jua
Tapi hati ku berkata

Tinggallah pujaan ku
Tiada cinta lagi
Kan ku pinta dari mu

Andainya kau tiada bahagia
Janganlah kau kesalkan lagi
Kiranya kau ingin kembali
Janganlah kau harapkan
Tiada cinta lagi
Kan ku pinta dari mu

One of the greatest songwriters ever - the late John Lennon.
"Imagine", a simple song with a lovely melody and lyrics promoting peace.
"Jealous Guy", as already mentioned, a song which tells the story of many a man's anguish, with raw emotional lyrics.
"Power To the People", a song which should be listened to by all, especially meek Singaporeans.
Other songs about peace like "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" and "Give Peace A Chance".
Numerous songs with the Beatles or co written with Paul McCartney, who is a good songwriter but definitely not as great in my opinion.

hi there

1. yes, agree with "imagine", pretty reflective and soul-searching.
2. sheep here may or may not appreciate its depth.
3. i like the duo "england dan and john ford coley" stuffs.
4. abba's "the winner takes it all" is another of my favourite.

John Lennon and Paul McCartney whilst with Beatles had a strange arrangement that's unprecedented and unemulated. 前无古人,后无来者。They didn't actually sit down together and co-write songs. They wrote their own songs separately, then mix and match lines here and there to come up with a Beatle song. Both had veto powers, i.e. both must agree, otherwise the song is out of Beatle consideration.

This arrangement left George Harrison and Ringo Starr out cold most of the times when it came to deciding album content. They had their share of their quota, but Lennon-McCartney materials would dominate all Beatle albums.

This worked out fine in the earlier few years. But from mid 60s onward, George and Ringo got more experienced and talent-developed. They found it stiffling to their personal expression in and contribution to the group. The Lennon-McCartney alliance was also strained as artistic direction drifted apart personally.

To accommodate all these, the Beatles were the most prolific album releasers in the 60s and whole pop history. They released 2 to 3 albums per year instead of the others' norm of 1 per year. So busy with writing and recording songs for albums, the Beatles quit live concert tours by 1966. Incredibly successful with these releases, the Beatles averaged 1 week out of 3 at No. 1 on Billboard album chart and 1 week of out 6 at No. 1 on Billboard single chart from their first No. 1 hit in 1964 to their last in 1970.

The Beatles also invented the concept album with Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, i.e. an album is a book in chapters, not a random collection of songs.

Another great songwriter / singer is Billy Joel.
The piano man hit the big time with strangely enough a song that simply described what he was doing before hit the big time - "Piano Man".
It happens to be one of my all-time favourite songs as well.
Other heartfelt songs followed this first hit, like "Just The Way You Are" which won a Grammy in the 1970s, "Honesty", "Say Goodbye To Hollywood", "It's Still Rock n' Roll To Me", etc etc.
In the 1980s, he came out with another big hit album, "An Innocent Man" which had hits like "Uptown Girl", "Tell Her About It" and the title track.
Not a great vocalist, but a great songwriter, pianist, performer, and singer who always gave his all in his writing and perforamances.
A true Amercian legend.

John Lennon was greatest in his recognition and acceptance of talent and sharing glory. I think anyone anywhere near John Lennon's calibre then would have told someone like Paul McCartney, no thank you, you're so clever you should go form your own group.

Paul McCartney was a real talent in songwriting, one of the best in world music history, but he's no bandleader. His group Wings (after Beatles) was very clipped and fragmented, because he's too talented and domineering. John Lennon could hold a group as individually talented as the Beatles together successfully and on top of the charts for 8 years, no mean feat. That's something Paul McCartney couldn't emulate. John Lennon still failed in the end, but it was quite a long run.

anyone noticed the new local singer, Olivia Ong ?

I think she is very pretty and sing very well
I watched and listened to her performing on 2 episodes of the Taiwan variety show "Kang Xi Lai Le".
Both Xiao S and Cai Kang Yong were very impressed by her singing voice.
So was I, she is very suited to singing those swinging bossa nova or R&B numbers. Very melodious voice, able to hit both high and low notes.
She even sang a Chinese song "Zheng Fu".
She's also quite pretty.
Funny thing is the first I heard about this SG singer is on a Taiwan program.

One of my favourite Chinese singers of all time is the legendary Chyi Qin.
I don't think he's a great songwriter, he wrote 2 good songs that I know of, the very famous "Da Yue Zai Dong Ji" and "Lang" (Wolf)
But he seems to get very good songs written for him by great songwriters, including Panda Xiong who wrote "Ye Ye Ye Ye" for him.
He sings his songs with great emotion, I'm listening to "Wu Qing De Yu Wu Qing De Ni" currently, and it's great hoe he really brings out the feeling in the music.

It's a bit disappointing that he seems to have faded slightly from the music scene, and that some people remember him more for being the brother of Chyi Yu (who sang the song Olive Tree) or the former boyfriend of the beautiful Joey Wang.

My favourite songwriter is Bob Dylan. Some consider his lyrics poetry. The melodies are good too, but most people cannot stand his voice.

Hmmmmm, nobody remembers Don Maclean? Not very prolific at all, but some of his songs are really gems - American Pie, Starry Starry Night.

Speaking of lyricists, there is one guy who will not cross most people's minds. But I think he is good. Weird Al Yankovich, anybody?

I think JJ Lin is a great talent. Great songwriter, good singer.
He has a very "sweet" duet with Ah Sa called "Xiao Jiu Wo" or "Little Dimple".
His latest album "100 Days" is one of the better recent albums.
"Jiangnan" is another one of my favourite songs.
The other 2, I don't like at all.
JJ got one song titled Cao Cao right ? very appropriate for those ROTK fans and CaoCao fans !

The song title is Vincent (not Starry Starry Night) in tribute to Vincent van Gogh. Starry, starry night is the opening line of the lyrics, referring to one of his most famous paintings.

American Pie was a mini-epic pop opera of American pop culture in the 50s and 60s. Beside these two songs, Don McLean wasn't very prolific. But these two were landmark songs.

Speaking of lyricists, there is one guy who will not cross most people's minds. But I think he is good. Weird Al Yankovich, anybody?

Wierd Al Yankovich was a parodist, most famous for his Eat It (from Beat It by Michael Jackson) and Another One Rides The Bus (from Another One Bites The Dust by Queen).

Great song. The second best from George Michael (after Careless Whisper). Careless Whisper was popularly taken to be a nice and great song in lamentation of romance broken up. But One More Try was already blatantly and unreservedly homosexual in theme. A great song nonetheless. It came from George Michael's greatest album artistically and commercially, Faith. That's one of the greatest albums in the 80s rivaling Michael Jackson etc.

Bob Dylan was another great songwriter. Singer? Not so much.
His songs were always meaningful yet controversial, like "Blowing In The Wind", The Times They Are A Changing", "Like A Rolling Stone", "Knocking On Heaven's Door", "My Back Pages", etc etc.
