Islam has never been a religion big on mercy from the start. In every islamic society, the mainstream school of though is to kill apostates, either through the State, local magistracy or at the hands of a lynch mob.

Whether clerics hijaked islam or not, islam for many years have prescribed killing of apostates. Cowards prefer to argue here that apostasy is not allowed but are complete cowards in real life to challenge their clerics openly. They prefer a status quo where clerics are free to kill apostates while demanding everyone believe that their religion endorse freedom of religion and no compulsion at the same time. It's akin to islamic culture of pedophilic child marriages, letting adults rape kids but still cannot call them pedophiles.
