The Legend of the Returned Sword
Ho Hoan Kiem means "lake of the returned sword". The story behind the name is a legend. In 1418, the Vietnamese emperor Le Loi fought a war against the Chinese. It wasn't going too well for him so when he walked by the lake one day, he saw a giant tortoise coming out of the water with a magic sword in its mouth. He took the sword and eventually defeated the Chinese army with it. When he was having his victory parade at the shores of Ho Hoan Kiem, the tortoise appeared again and demanded the sword back. Before he could do anything, the sword flew away from his hands to the tortoise's mouth. It disappeared in the water. The emperor had a temple built which can still be seen today.
Now, here's the curious thing: In 1968, a giant tortoise was discovered dead in the lake. Scientists estimate that it's at least 200 years old. It is exhibited in the temple (Jade Hill Temple, located on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake) and it is really huge: I would guess that it is about 1.5 metres long and weighs some 200 kilos.
Apart from all these historic facts (that you can see in the shows in the Water Puppet Theatre next to the lake), Ho Hoan Kiem is a wonderful place to relax and watch the wind rippling the water. In the early morning and the evening, hundreds of Hanoians gather at the lakeshore to play badminton or do tai chi. Moreover, when you visit the lake at darkness, the lights of thousands vehicles passing by are beautifully reflected in the water

Hoan Kiem Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, Hán tự: , meaning "Lake of the Returned Sword" or "Lake of the Restored Sword"), also known as Hồ Gươm (Sword Lake), is a lake in the historical center of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city and serves as a focal point for its public life.
History
According to the legend, in early 1428, Emperor Lê Lợi was boating on the lake when a Golden Turtle God (Kim Qui) surfaced and asked for his magic sword, Heaven's Will. Lợi concluded that Kim Qui had come to reclaim the sword that its master, a local God, the Dragon King (Long Vương) had given Lợi some time earlier, during his revolt against Ming China. Later, Emperor Lợi gave the sword back to the turtle after he finished fighting off the Chinese. Emperor Lợi renamed the lake to commemorate this event, from its former name Luc Thuy meaning "Green Water". The Turtle Tower (Tháp Rùa) standing on a small island near the centre of lake is linked to the legend. The first name of Hoàn Kiếm lake is Tả Vọng, when the King hadn't given the Magical Sword back to the Golden Turtle God (Cụ Rùa).

The Huc Bridge

Large soft-shell turtles, either of the species Rafetus swinhoei or a separate species named Rafetus leloi in honor of the emperor, had been sighted in the lake for many years. The last known individual was found dead on January 19, 2016. There are three remaining turtles of the species R. swinhoei.
Near the northern shore of the lake lies Jade Island on which the Temple of the Jade Mountain (Ngoc Son Temple) stands. The temple was erected in the 18th century. It honors the 13th-century military leader Tran Hung Dao who distinguished himself in the fight against the Yuan Dynasty, Van Xuong, a scholar, and Nguyen Van Sieu, a Confucian master and famous writer in charge of repairs made to the temple in 1864. Jade Island is connected to the shore by the wooden red-painted The Huc Bridge/Cầu Thê Húc (The Huc, meaning Morning Sunlight Bridge).

SINGAPORE - Within two days of a vicious attack in Serangoon Road, police on Friday (July 27) produced in court five of seven people allegedly involved in Wednesday's slashing incident in which a man was left badly wounded near Broadway Hotel.

Sharvin Raj Suraj, 17, Haresh Shanmuganathan, 22, Arjun Retnavelu, 23, Victor Alexander Arumugam, 24, and Dinesh Kumar Ruvy, 28, were each charged with one count of rioting with deadly weapons.

The five Singaporeans are accused of attacking Mr Dhines Selvarajah, 26, using weapons such as a baton, a chopper and a parang.

Earlier reports had claimed a samurai sword was also used in the attack but there was no mention of this in court documents.

On Thursday, police investigators escorted Arjun to Lower Peirce Reservoir, where he had allegedly claimed the sword was thrown into the water. But a four-hour search by commercial divers from Asia Dive Academy proved futile, with no sword found.

Court documents show that Arjun, Victor and Dinesh allegedly carried out the attack while they were under remission orders.

This means the trio had earlier been convicted in court for other crimes, and as part of the orders, they were not supposed to reoffend within a stipulated period of time.

If convicted of rioting, the trio could each face an enhanced sentence for breaching their remission orders. As part of the orders, Victor was not supposed to reoffend between March 17 this year and March 15 next year.

For Arjun, this period was from Dec 16 last year to March 22 next year, while for Dinesh, this was from May 11 this year to Oct 21 next year.

It emerged that Victor was hauled to court this April after he allegedly disturbed the public peace by fighting with one Visnu Suriamurthi at a bus stop near Lucky Plaza shopping centre earlier that month.

This charge was still pending when he allegedly took part in the Serangoon Road slashing. Court documents did not reveal details of the offences the other four men were involved in.

Mr Dhines, who was attacked at about 2.20pm on Wednesday, was left badly injured on a busy road.

But he was conscious when he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where injuries were discovered on the back of his head, arms and legs.

His attackers fled in a rental car, prompting a police manhunt for the assailants.

Within 16 hours of the attack, police nabbed seven people in the vicinity of Corporation Road in Jurong and Block 26 Sin Ming Industrial Estate, including the five charged on Friday.

The five are now remanded at the Central Police Division and will be back in court on Aug 3.

In a CCTV infested country like Singapore, I doubt they can run very far unless you cross the border within the hour after the attack.
