A POLAR bear prepares to eat a cub — in shocking snaps fuelling fears that the Arctic beasts are being driven to cannibalism.

Adults have long been known to KILL rivals' cubs but incidents of them DEVOURING their own kind are rare.

Now, however, experts believe rising temperatures are leaving bears desperate with hunger.

The pictures were taken by environmentalist Jenny Ross near the Norwegian island of Svalbard — where Eton schoolboy Horatio Chapple, 17, was mauled to death by a bear in August.

Arctic expert and documentary maker John Downer, from Bristol, said: "Eating cubs is increasing as the level of ice gets less, seals leave and bears fall back on other sources of food."
