<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->SHE was standing in to tend a shop for her sister who had fallen ill. But the teenager, who was then 13, ended up being molested and nearly raped at the shop around Bugis.
The 18-year-old boy - who cannot be named in order to protect the girl's identity - was sent to a reformative training centre yesterday for his crimes. Offenders between the ages of 16 and 18 are confined for between 18 months and three years and put through a tough regimen of foot drills, counselling, education and vocational training.
Court papers said that on Jan 14, the girl's sister, aged 16, was hospitalised and could not tend the shop which was left in her care by her employer who was overseas. She asked her sister and the boy, who was the older girl's friend, to cover for her.
The next day, the pair met at a nearby shopping mall before heading to the shop. After lunch, the girl decided to take a nap in a room at the back of the shop.
While she was sleeping, the boy, who was then 17, went into the room, slid his hand into her jeans and molested her before masturbating himself. He then removed her clothes before taking his own off and tried to have sex with her.
She woke up and screamed in pain. He asked her to keep quiet and continued to try to have sex with her while she cried. He failed in his attempts and gave up after a while, asking her to wash up.
They continued manning the shop but did not talk to each other and closed shop a few hours later.
The girl did not make a police report immediately as she was confused, the court papers said.
She did so only the following day after being advised by her schoolmates. SUJIN THOMAS
