How Nadya fell for an unromantic Ah Beng who went to jail
Nadya and her unromantic Ah Beng were worlds apart. She was a smart girl from the Express stream in school; while he hung out with a group of guys from the Normal Technical stream.
Yet in spite of their differences and the trials and tribulations they faced, they managed to pull through stronger.
This is their love story.
“I never thought I will fall in love so hard. And even if I did, I never thought I would fall for a guy who is a total opposite of me.
“It started out in Secondary School where I remembered vividly how my girlfriends and I would sit at the same table during recess time everyday. I could still recall the group of infamous 'Ah Bengs' who would casually sit at a table beside us.
"Our conversations were very minimal and we never talked as I was a Malay Express student and the 'Ah Bengs' were from Normal Technical.
"It was already a tradition that we Express students don't normally speak to the infamous 'Ah Bengs' as we do not fancy such people.
"I graduated with amazing O levels results and was posted to Nanyang Polytechnic to do a Science course.
"As usual, I met different guys in my Tertiary level but none came as close to Daniel Tjang.
"On a normal lazy Sunday, I was browsing through my Friendster when I caught sight of a comment sent by Daniel Tjang who said that it was long since we last met.
"I couldn't recall who the hell was he but nevertheless, I replied out of gesture.
"After much brain consuming time, I managed to remember that he was one of the 'Ah Bengs' who used to sit beside my recess table. We started out at Friendster then continued to MSN.
"My sincere intention was to only befriend him because I was afraid to get into a relationship with a Chinese guy. He continuously tried to get my number but I firmly refused to give in as I didn't want anything from him.
"One day, out of pity, I decided to give in but I constantly remind him that I cannot text him or call him much as I was using a Prepaid card - that was a white lie.
"As expected, he texted me every single day despite that I rarely replied to him. Until...
"I was packing up to go for a family vacation to Sarawak. I texted him telling him that I will be flying off at 4am in the morning and will only be back 3 days later. I went to bed after that.
"At 4am exactly, I received a text message from him saying 'Wake up, Nadya and Have a good trip!'.
"I was insanely touched that he could wake up at 4am in the morning just to send that message.
"Our conversations grew and we contacted each other more often. When I was expecting him to ask me out for a date, he didn't. I was quite disappointed when he just asked me out for coffee at a nearby coffee shop near my place.
"Nevertheless, when I first saw him, there were butterflies in my stomach and I swear I was already falling him. I realised that he was a typical unromantic, straightforward and firm temperamental 'Ah Beng'.
"It was on July l 2007 at exactly 12am when I received a call from Daniel.
"He asked if it was okay to talk and I was very nervous so most of the time I was just replying 'yes' and 'no's.
"After we hung up, he texted me saying that he wants me to be his girlfriend. I was scared because it was my first time with a Chinese guy.
"He shared the same emotions as me but we decided to give it a try.
"Everything went well despite that his temper always got it the way. And then the worst thing happened.
"It was the eve of my 18th birthday and we were on the phone planning for my birthday celebration. I fell asleep soundly looking forward to my 18th birthday.
"As usual, Daniel would always text me a birthday wish by 12am but that night, he did not.
"The very next day, I went to school as usual with a heavy heart.
"I kept telling myself that Daniel must be planning on a surprise because he never starts his day without calling me.
"It was 3pm in the afternoon and my handphone was still silent. I was terrified.
"I called his friend, Stanley, and he said that Daniel was supposed to go for 'Mahjong' yesterday but he never turned up.
"I wanted to call the police but Stanley insisted that he would find Daniel.
"My 18th birthday was spent walking around aimlessly alone searching for Daniel.
"Finally, I sat down by the Esplanade river, crying and staring at Daniel's picture on my 18th birthday.
"I remembered that my wish on that day was that wherever Daniel may be, I wished that he would be fine and that he would be happy.
"When I got home, I received a call from Stanley.
"I didn't know that Daniel was involved in a crime in which I was kept from knowing.
"He had a fight a few nights before and injured a boy who was admitted into hospital with bad injuries. That night, he was caught by the police and was arrested for two weeks.
"I waited patiently and when the day finally arrived, we met and when he hugged and cried, I understood that our love was too strong to ever let go.
"Since his case was still under investigation, we had a mere three months before his final verdict and his sentence.
"On the day of the verdict, I was at work rushing for a meeting with a client. I received his call a few minutes before that and when he told me that he was sentenced to jail for another three weeks, I cried.
"He told me how much he loved me and that it was hard for him to let go. And his final words was for me to go and find a better guy. A guy who would make sure that I can get all the attention I need. He finally hung up and I was depressed.
"I tried to move on, but I never did. I kept on waiting and waiting for him. When he was finally out, he was given probation. It took all his might to search and get my number back and call me up. We met and made up again.
"He promised that he was a changed man. And not because he wants to change. But because I changed him to a better man.
"He said that even if the world felt like crumbling down and even if our faiths coincides, he would forever hold me tight and he will never let me go.
"All I needed to do was keep smiling, cause every time I smile, it makes him feel like he is the luckiest and perfect guy in the world.
"Despite all the obstacles, till today Daniel and I are still holding on strong. It has been three years and although I can never learn how to speak Chinese, know that language, race and religion is not a barrier when it comes to love.
