Girl, 14, abducted from home at night

Staff reporter, The West Australian September 18, 2013, 10:34 am

A nationwide alert has been issued in the United States for a 14-year-old girl kidnapped by two gunmen in a violent home invasion.

NBC News reports that Ayvani Hope Perez, who was last seen wearing Star Wars pajama pants and a superhero shirt was believed to be "in harm's way," Clayton County Police Lt. Marc Richards said Tuesday afternoon.

The FBI has been included in the investigation.

Two men reportedly broke into the Perez family home in Atlanta, Georgia, at 2am on Tuesday.

Ayvani's mother tried to hide her two children, local police told media.

The family's pet dog started barking and the intruders shot it before demanding jewellery and cash from Ayvani's mother.

When she said she did not have any valuables they took 14-year-old Ayvani. Her brother, 15, was not harmed.

The dog later died of its wounds.

Police have received tips relating to Ayvani's abduction and say "the investigation is fluid".

It is believed the armed suspects were driving dark-blue or grey four-wheel drive.

A prayer vigil has been scheduled at Ayvani's school, Dutchtown High School, where a teacher, Lori Burroughs, said Ayvani was "a good kid".

"She's really tiny, but she can be feisty — so I think that could be a good thing in this situation," Ms Burroughs said.
