Re: SGH apologise for 4 deaths from Hepatitis C

Why KBW never ask GKY to do the needful?

Re: SGH apologise for 4 deaths from Hepatitis C

SGH has already apologized. Let's move on. I hope SGH will give the affected patients a goodwill 10% discount from the cost of the medical bills to threat their Hepatitis C condition.

It is likely a ft assistant nurse helper error.
Who inject insulin into diabetics patient from small bottle insulin.
Never or forget or lazy to change needle used by a hep c patient.
Reuse on other patients...it is a prolong chain infection cause by human error.hep c is not air borne viral.
Nurse sure get pok sent back.

The hospital is the largest and oldest government hospital in Singapore

Singapore’s largest hospital apologised Tuesday after 22 kidney patients were infected with hepatitis C, with four dying in a rare outbreak at the prestigious facility.

The infections at the government-run Singapore General Hospital (SGH) involved patients admitted to one ward between April and June.

Hospital officials said while the four fatalities had other serious conditions, they “are not able to rule out the possibility” that hepatitis C could have been a factor in their deaths.

Singapore’s health care system has been rated among the best in Asia and government hospitals are well-funded.

Patients from around the world fly to Singapore for treatment at SGH and other hospitals.

“We would like to apologise unreservedly for the grief, pain and anguish this has caused our patients and their families,” SGH chief executive Ang Chong Lye said in a statement.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has formed an independent committee to review the findings of an internal investigation carried out by the hospital.

The Singapore Tourism Board says foreign patients spent Sg$832 million ($584 million) in 2013 for treatment in the country, which encourages “medical tourism”.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) website says the hepatitis C virus is bloodborne, and the most common modes of infection are through “unsafe injection practices, inadequate sterilisation of medical equipment and the transfusion of unscreened blood and blood products”.

About half a million people die annually from hepatitis C-related liver diseases, according to WHO, the United Nations’ health watchdog.

Please lah....

Hep C develops very slowly in the victim's body. It takes on average about 15 years for the Hep C virus to cause substantial damage to the liver. There are very expensive drugs that can flush it from the victim's body.

The word should be more worried about Hep D, E, G and K.

The person(s) who discovered Hepatitis K, IMHO, may well be bestowed the Nobel Prize in Medicine. But that's about 30 to 40 years from now.

Que sera, sera

It is all WP's fault.

After WP won Aljunied GRC at GE2011, Singapore had Haze, Orchard Rd Floods, MRT Strikes, MRT Breakdowns, Congestion, Little India Riots, High Unemployment, High Crime Rates, High Corruption etc.

Vote WP out of Government. Take back Hougang and Aljunied GRC.

Re: SGH apologise for 4 deaths from Hepatitis C

from june onwards, why let the cat out of the bag only now?
why not before the erections for the oppos to score additional votes, in that we need more ft's to replace self-inflicted sinkie deaths

Re: SGH apologise for 4 deaths from Hepatitis C

i am just waiting for one of those buffoons to say something to this effect "honest mistake. let's move on"

NONSENSE!!! The cause must be found in order to prevent a recurrence. I suggest a high level committee to start brainstorming the possible causes using the fishbone chart. To kick off I will start by suggesting a few possible causes. I looked up the organizational chart of sgh renal department & observed quite a few strange sounding names with foreign medical qualifications like mex(ico), Yangon, etc , hardly any NUS qualifications, need to check authenticity of qualifications. Another possible cause I can brainstorm now is that are there any other dubious character in the department like that male nurse, cannot remember his name, who wanted to harm Singaporeans & is now systematically dipping & infecting innocent sgh patients? It is important that as many ideas be brainstormed to quickly find out the causes to protect innocent patients from harm ASAP.

Re: SGH apologise for 4 deaths from Hepatitis C

This is what happen when stupid sinkies vote for PAP...

I am looking forward to more disasters like this happening to sinkies..

Re: SGH apologise for 4 deaths from Hepatitis C

Most likely cannot cover up anymore than they announce the news...they better hope it's a internal nurse sabotaging then, if it is a blood bank case (I think also located in Sgh) than its even worse as patients from other hospitals could have used the same blood during transfusion...

Also don't understand why the cmb and health minister is apologizing and investigating on behalf of CEO...

WP Queries Delay In Hep C Outbreak Announcement

The Workers’ Party extends its deepest condolences to the affected families and friends of the four patients who passed away since the outbreak of the Hepatitis C virus infections at the renal ward of the Singapore General Hospital (SGH) that affected 22 patients.

It was reported SGH had been aware of the infection cluster since early June 2015, but information surrounding the outbreak was only made public four months later, in October 2015. An outbreak of Hepatitis C is a potential public health risk. The knowledge of such an outbreak is relevant to all citizens as they weigh their treatment options.

The Workers’ Party would therefore like to seek clarifications from the Minister with regard to the standard protocol in releasing information on such outbreaks, whether or not they occur within a treatment facility. These questions are posed with a view to strengthen Singapore’s infection control protocols in the future.

•Is there a timeframe within which healthcare institutions must report such incidents to the Ministry?

•What does the Ministry believe is a permissible interval of time before the public is made aware of such incidents?

We call on the Ministry of Health (MOH) to convey any breach in infection control to the public at the first instance should such an incident recur in future.

We welcome the formation of an independent review committee to investigate this incident with a view to recommending measures to prevent the recurrence of such an incident. While the cause of the outbreak is being investigated, any potential health risks should be made known to the public and all healthcare institutions as soon as possible so that the public can make informed healthcare choices for themselves and their loved ones, and institutions can take the necessary precautions.

Given the severity of this outbreak, the Workers’ Party would also like to seek clarification from the Minister as to the measures that have been put in place outside of SGH since June 2015 to mitigate the health risks caused by this outbreak, and to prevent the cluster from expanding.
