“This is because all land is sold at prices set by the Chief Valuer, and the land sale proceeds go into the reserves. When he says that I’m going to finance this by lowering the value of land, basically what he’s doing is taking money from the reserves. It is not a matter of left pocket to right pocket, it’s a matter of taking, dipping into the reserves,” - Mah Bow Tan
The current high prices of HDB flats had forced many Singaporeans to undertake 25 - 30 years mortgage loans in order make their monthly instalment payment barely manageable. It is the right policy to grow our reserve from increasing the debt burden of the people through public housing? Is the aim of public housing to put the citizens under heavy debt in order to keep our reserves afloat?
