I remember there were a few things that undid GY's team. Some were: a workers' dormitory was put up in Serangoon Gardens estate despite objections from residents, old man threatened voters they would suffer consequences if they did not vote PAP in and the immigrant issue was starting to rear its head. Anyway, intelligence gathering before the polls would have indicated that Aljunied GRC might fall and the political masters would have been alerted. In the 1976 General Election there was a last minute switch of PAP candidate in Kg Chai Chee when feedback from the ground showed the opposition candidate JBJ might win. PAP candidate Shari Tadin was replaced with Fong Sip Chee. The latter won. In the 1988 GE, Tay Eng Soon was sent at the last minute to successfully counter WP's Francis Seow and his team in the Eunos GRC. If LHL had used the same tactic probably GY and his team would have been saved.
