Former foreign minister George Yeo said Saturday that many Singaporeans had "lost faith in the Government". He also urged locals to work together for the interests of the country.

Speaking at a Punggol Community Club dinner on Saturday night, he urged Singaporeans of all political stripes to work together, saying Singapore had been divided since last year's general election.

According to The Sunday Times, Mr Yeo said the ruling People's Action Party's share of 60.1 per cent of votes showed that many had lost faith in the Government and that was not a good thing.

"When a country is divided, many problems will arise," he said. He also called for Singaporeans to link their hearts together and broaden their minds.

The former foreign minister said both the politicians in opposition parties and those within the Government make must an effort to work together, citing his former grassroots leader Dr Ang Yong Guan as an example.

Dr Ang joined the Singapore Democratic Party last year after chairing the Punggol Community Club management committee for a long time. Dr Yeo said although Dr Ang had joined the opposition, it was still possible for them to work together.

The dinner was organised by Aljunied GRC's Bedok Reservoir-Punggol ward to thank Mr Yeo for his 23 years of service as their adviser.

He had stepped down on Jan 1 and was succeeded by grassroots veteran Anthony Loh.

People's Association special adviser Lim Boon Heng was among the 1,000 residents and grassroots volunteers who attended the dinner.

There were tributes from grassroots leaders during the dinner and performances from residents.

Mr Yeo was the first of the five defeated PAP candidates in Aljunied GRC to step down as grassroots adviser and branch chairman.

The Sunday Times said the announcements of the retirement of two others, Ms Lim Hwee Hua and Mdm Cynthia Phua are impending.

did they invite the opposition MPs for the party?

work for the betterment of ingaporeans?

Go FO

Do not worry. Singaporeans are really banding to together for the first time in the last 25 years to work for the interests of Singapore. It is already past lost of faith in the government - it is iron-clad resist. Go to the streets and ask the taxi drivers to the hawkers to the laborers. They are sick and do not give a damned about the dirty threat politics to their rice bowls. Do not think the common people do not know how small time entrepreneurs are coerced not to vote opposition lest risk losing their jobs or license operate.

LBH and GY aiming for 2nd bite of the cherry?
Not contend to retiring with their millions?
Still want to give politics another shot?

George Yeo should run in Hougang, at least got some fight, otherwise PAP has zero chance

Workers Party shot itself in the foot with Yaw saga but not enough to lose the ward if PAP candidate is not the very best

i think PAP standards too high. 60% popular vote can be considered a very strong mandate. times has changed. PAP won't get the high 60% / 70% pv in future elections anymore.

Only after a politician left the party can he freely speaks the truth.

Isn't it sad, how civilization has evolved?

Do you still think politics can save the country??

maybe science can help?

everyone knows that. Gy didn't need to repeat it. what he should do is to highlight why there is this GREAT DIVIDE NOW. he should also highlight the ARROGANCE of the pap and their spiteful nature. we are seeing it again during the recent parleement which is clearly represented by vikram nair.

He said basically the same thing during the last election. Nothing new.

He also urged locals to work together for the interests of the country.

Sporeans of all races have been workin together for the interest of this Cuntry for decades only to further enrich these PAP bastards and their lackeys..Why must Sporeans work so hard for the interest of this Cuntry only to be treated as 2nd class citizens by those Scums In Whites...??? Who caused this great divide..??? Its those PAP scums themselves...!!!!

me reckoned that the income disparity would most likely cause the incumbent to lose more votes in the long run. is that the root cause of why the Citizens are losing faith in the Government? :D:D:D

IF the Opposition got 60 % votes in the GE 2016,all Singaporeans will benefit and be taken care from pro-Singaporean policies.
Vote for the Opposition !!!
KNNCCB to the PAP !!!

We citizens had been working with PAP.gov.sg for a very long time, close to 50 years, but we got nothing in return and only PAP and cronies got all the riches and perks.
After all these years we citizens are nothing but digits.

I don't think GY would do that. Resigning from grassroots adviser and branch chairman is perhaps the sign he's giving that he's quitting politics for good. He's not as popular as projected to be. Note that his Aljunied team suffered two 40+% margins to opposition (SDP team 1991 led by Ashleigh Seow and WP team 2006 led by Sylvia Lim) until finally defeated by WP team 2011 led by LTK. In fact, LTK took him on directly in his Bedok Reservoir-Punggol division and beat him too.

This is life cycle:
