Singapore footballer Dollah Kassim in critical condition
By Today's reporter Shamir Osman | Posted: 04 October 2009 2249 hrs

SINGAPORE: Singapore's football legend Dollah Kassim collapsed after playing in a friendly match between ex-international players from Singapore and Malaysia in the Sultan of Selangor Cup on Sunday.

The former national player, who was known as the Gelek King for his extraordinary dribbling skills, played for about 12 minutes during the first half of the game. Fans watching the match said Dollah looked uncomfortable while playing.

Sources told MediaCorp the footballer had a seizure on the sidelines of the pitch after he came off and a doctor said he was having a cardiac event.

MediaCorp understands Dollah needed resuscitation at the pitchside and in the ambulance on the way to hospital.

He underwent surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and he is currently in a critical condition.

FORMER Singapore football icon Dollah Kassim collapsed at half-time during the Veterans' match at the Sultan of Selangor Cup on Sunday.

The 60-year-old, known as the Gelek King for his Malaysia Cup exploits in the 1970s, reportedly suffered a heart attack and was taken to the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where he underwent surgery.

He was reported to be in stable condition in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit.

This is the second time a former Singapore international has suffered a heart attack during the Cup - a friendly between ex-internationals from Malaysia and Singapore - in the last three years.

S. Rajagopal, another household name from the 1970s, also had a heart attack while on the pitch in 2006. He was the coach of the veterans' team on Sunday night.

60 years old and still playing football

The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. This is case for many sports entusiasts who still relive their former skills and love their sports. Like the weekend warrior.

Hope he can make it and gets well soon - probably a case of exhaustion from over exertion. We should enjoy the game, but not die from the game.

Mokhtar Dahari of Selangor collapsed and died long time ago.

These people think they are still strong and fit as though they are in their twenties. I am about same age as Quah Kim Song. I was a sportsman myself, and dare say I am more fitter and stronger than them when they are in their prime. Right now I cant even run and swim like I was before.

This guy is very lucky,he dun have to suffer much pain. Cancer patient and the family have to go thru long agonizing pain and suffering.

Mokhtar died of muscle wasting disease. He was one of the best I have seen.

Yes, the best striker ever from SEA. Watching him play and score, I have no complaint in the years when Singapore kept losing to Malaysia and Selangor.

Anyway, Singapore had our players and moments too. Quah Kim Song (Singapore's Kevin Keegan), Mohammad Nor (Singapore's Trevor Francis) and of course Dollah Kassim (Singapore's very own Gelek King!)

I doubt that many Sporeans are even aware of inflamation which is the prime cause of death. Its a pity because it can be prevented with proper nutrition or supplementation

Only people like LKY who has access to unlimited healthcare will live a long life. The rest will have to read up & educate yourself if you can't afford a good doctor, regular checkups,....

walau ! he's not dead yet.
