SINGAPORE: The 170 candidates who took part in the General Election 2011 spent some S$5.5 million on the polls, mostly on publicity and advertising materials.
The expenses were more than double those in the 2006 election, when candidates spent some S$2.6 million.
The People's Action Party (PAP) spent an average of about S$1.786 per voter, while the opposition's average was about S$0.57 per voter.[RT: spent more than 3 times yet only won ⅗ of the votes? ROI can fight with Temasek! :p]
The figures are reflected in the returns and statements of election expenses filed by the candidates.
The PAP team for the newly-created Nee Soon GRC spent the most in the recent election. The amount - S$352,538.04.
In fact, the team's leader, Mr K Shanmugam, spent the highest amount of S$84,288 among all the candidates who contested.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong's Ang Mo Kio GRC team was the next highest spending GRC, at S$340,905. The sum included S$12,000 spent on editing and translation services.
In comparison, the Reform Party team which contested in Ang Mo Kio GRC spent the least - just S$29,528.
The PAP's Dr Amy Khor was the top spender for candidates who contested in single wards.
Dr Khor, who garnered the biggest winning margin in her Hong Kah North ward, spent about S$77,770.
Most of the money was spent on advertising and promotional materials. Some S$10,000 was spent on customised pocket tissues.
Her total amount was about six times more than her opponent, Mr Sin Kek Tong from the Singapore People's Party who spent some S$13,640.
The National Solidarity Party's (NSP) Yip Yew Weng, who contested in Radin Mas, spent about S$11,900 - the lowest among those who stood in single-seat constituencies.
The NSP's biggest spenders were from its team for Jurong GRC, which paid out some S$95,700.
The Workers' Party team which won Aljunied GRC spent S$124,910 - with some S$50,000 going to election booklets, envelopes and postage.
But the PAP team for Aljunied spent more than double - at S$312,390.
However, the Reform Party team, which lost in West Coast GRC, spent S$125,960.
The statements of election expenses filed by the candidates are now open for public scrutiny at the Elections Department - for a fee of S$2 per candidate.
