Gawkers at accident scenes can be issued summonses
KUALA LUMPUR: Drivers who stop their vehicles to gawk at accident scenes can be issued summonses, said Road Safety Department (JKJR) director-general Datuk Suret Singh. He said this was provided for under Rule 16 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He said only five parties had a role to play in the event of road accidents, namely witnesses, rescuers, government agencies that had an interest, interested non-governmental organisations and members of the public who have been trained to be first responders.
"Others should not stop as this only leads to unnecessary jams at the scene and also poses safety risks like causing minor accidents to happen.
"That is why they can be issued summonses, for obstructing traffic and disturbing rescue operations," he told reporters when launching a road safety advocacy campaign here Thursday.
The campaign, held in collaboration with the Road Transport Department, City Hall and Police, was to raise awareness on the importance of buckling up not only in the front seats of cars but at the back as well. - Bernama
